This surprises me because Greene isn't coming off of a huge year, so the money sounds about right. Could it be the term?

when is his UFA year? (guessing 2 years from now because owners and GMs are jerks?)

I think it is just normal to low ball the first offer (on term i would think) and then it is normal for the player to reject it.

I think that he still suits up for the Caps. If not, the payoff will be nice. It is going to cost a 1st at least.

There's certainly going to be a lot of interested parties if this turns sour, but I'm pretty sure this is just normal.

I doubt it. Would you pay 5 mil a year and a first round pick at minimum for him?

Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 - 1st & 3rd round pick

who knows ... there could be a team out there who might consider it

We have learned that #Canucks goalie Eddie Lack has said no to Vancouver's qualifying offer.

Green needs to prove he can still be a productive NHL player. From Japer's Rink...

...Green - who led all defensemen in even-strength goals over the three-year span ending in 2009-10 - didn't have a single one in 32 games in 2011-12, and in 87 minutes of power-play ice time, he managed just a single assist. At even-strength, Mike Green was outscored, per minute, by Karl Alzner. Yeah, it was that bad.

Here's the conundrum with Green. He's a good defender (he's improved a lot), but not so good that you are going to pay him big dollars just for his D skills. And his offensive skills seem diminished (vanished?) following some injuries. So who knows what player he is going to be over the next couple seasons. Total wild card.

I'm guessing the Caps will up the dollar value slightly, tack on a year, and they'll figure something out. I think we want to hope Green turns it around offensively, but we don't want to commit too much to him either. Lucky for us, those same commitment issues and the draft picks that would have to be dropped will probably keep away most competing offers.

I'd guess Mike Green is signed for $10.5 million for 2 years.

I think this had more to do with the new systems that he was playing in. I say "systems" because Hunter changed systems mid-shift sometimes.

It is a win-win for us. If he signs, we get a potentially great player. If he signs elsewhere, we get a 1st and 3rd and more cap space.

No but another first round pick from a team that is likely trying to meet the Cap floor wouldn't suck.

That's a really good point. I could see the Isles, BJs and potentially the Hurricanes taking a swing.
