The common sense thing would be to say "Suck it up, you were winning by 13 points"

Which is pretty much exactly what Silver said

says someone who doesn’t know the rules...

Silver speaking nonsense to avoid doing the only common sense thing.

timing is literally irrelevant to the mechanics.

it’s either a misapplication or it isn’t.
It's not common sense at all to replay every game or portion of a game where what you are proposing happens. It's total madness.

This is a process error. The second they didn’t let dantoni challenge it it became a process error.

Indeed. But the madness lies in your solution. You can't be replaying every time one happens.

That’s how it works. Just like in baseball. That’s why the pine tar game was replayed after they incorrectly called Brett out.

Has basketball ever done it before?

Yes they have. In 2007 or 8.
Well, I guess I'd say you have a good point, but does one regular season game matter when even the outcome isnt necessarily gonna change?

Don't you just have to say it is what it is? A mistake?

I would feel differently if it was a playoff game, or even an important late season one.

Since 1982, there have been 2 instances where the end of an NBA game was replayed due to referee error and both were far different than what happened with the Rockets.

In this one: In 2008 the Heat were involved in a game with the Hawks in which Shaq was incorrectly fouled out of the game. The last 51.9 seconds of the game were replayed, partially because it was also found that the Hawks official scorers did not respond properly when the mistake was discovered.

NBA grants Heat 51.9 second do-over vs. Hawks

In this one, the last couple of seconds of a 1982 game were replayed because the Lakers Norm Nixon faked a foul shot, never releasing the ball, resulting in a jump ball which the Lakers won in overtime. It was ruled that there should have been no lane violation because Nixon never released the ball. The last couple of seconds was replayed with the score 116-114 Spurs. The Spurs won.

N.B.A. Upholds Spurs' Protest

In both cases, those mistakes directly effected the outcome of the game.

In the Rockets case, they were up 13 with 7 minutes left. Far, far different.

Actually this one is far closer to the first one. A procedural error.

The time left in the game is 100% irrelevant to if a protest should be upheld or not. This is just a way to weasel out of doing the right thing by a weasel in charge.

Actually, it's not. In the Heat/Hawks game, there was only 51.9 seconds left and they were denied their 2nd best player in a very close game because of an error by the home team. They didn't have time to adjust to the loss of Shaq.

You have that same situation with the Heat holding a double digit lead that they proceed to give up...no replay.

In the Lakers/Spurs, there was literally no opportunity for the Spurs to recover from that missed call. So only the last couple of seconds was replayed.

Again, that same situation with over 7 minutes left and a double digit Spurs lead...no replay.

Time is irrelevant.

It was either a procedural error or it wasn’t.

You can keep thinking that time is irrelevant, but it's not.

You can make a case that time shouldn't be relevant, not a good case, but you can make one. But the fact is, it's relevant.

No it's not.

Once you have a procedural error like that, it's either right or it's wrong.

The one from the 80s is actually a good argument for replaying the Saints/Rams game from last year.

But the 2000s one, the team had almost a full minute to recover. Clearly that was too much time as well.

Bottom line, this is a ridiculous decision. By a weaselly scumbag of a human being. He went out of his way to get it wrong.

I guarantee that if either of the instances that I linked had happened at the point in the game that the Rockets did, there would have been no replay. Especially if they had a double digit lead.

Saints/Rams game wasn't a procedural error. It was a missed foul call. They happen on nearly every play, including the facemask on Goff that would've put the Rams with 1st and goal instead of setting for a FG before the interference non-call.

Neither was the the play in the 80s. That wasn't procedural at all. It was like them missing the double dribble on Virginia last year against Auburn with 4 seconds left.

but yes I agree that the officials were abysmal to both teams in that NFCCG. unlke the AFCCG which was solely about making sure NE won.
