So, do Calgary throw in the 2nd round pick for Buffalo to take Kotalik?!? I don't like that if true.

The sky is falling at Calgarypuck, the general consensus is that this is worse than the Phaneuf trade.

I hate to say it dash, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened. Calgary was so desperate for Cap space - minus Kotalik and Regehr they have $7.5M per Capgeek, so they only had $.5M before that - that Regier knew he was in the position of power on this one.

I don't like it either though personally, because we're now stuck with $3M in salary that could have been well spent on....well, pretty much anything else.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Sabres turned around and bought him out today or tomorrow so that they only get hit with $1M for each of the next two years.

BTW...is it any coincidence that we have Sather to blame for this situation?

Other than the Kotalik/2nd Rounder aspect, I see this as a benefit for both teams. Butler has the potential to be good for a long time in this league and impressed me a lot when he was up last year. Byron hasn't had much of a shot yet, but he's cheap and should be able to come directly into a 3rd or 4th line role.

And Regehr will certainly help Buffalo. They have the luxury of having a very good looking pipeline of young D coming through the system, but need that veteran leadership to coach those young guys from on the ice, rather than Rivet's press box leadership. I see him pairing well with Myers too, because Regehr is a very stay-at-home guy, and should be a good fall-back for Myers more forward-looking style, when he inevitably makes a few bad turnovers.

Sabres knew exactly what they were doing with this trade. They get the big defenseman in Regher and get someone to put Myers with as he still needs a veteran defender alongside him at this point.

The sabres are also very very familiar with Alex Kotalik considering he spent several years in the sabres system and on the sabres team during their "cup run years with drury and brierre".

The reason the sabers got the 2nd round pick is Calgary wanted Bryon and sabres didn't want to give him up for just kotalik and regher. Calgary threw in the 2nd round pick to add bryon to the deal. As calgary is a big team and doesn't have that smaller quick forward in their system at all. The Sabres on the other hand are full of smaller forwards so when calgary offered the 2nd pick as well sabres pulled the trigger.

Trust me Sabresfan, Kotalik was the reason the 2nd round pick was added. Kotalik will most likely be bought out or spend next year in the minors until his contract is up. He spent almost 30 games in the minors last year and only managed to light the lamp 6 times, against AHL calibre goalies. Kotalik was a salary dump by the Flames. In short, Our savior Pegula basically bought a 2nd round pick in next years draft for $3 million.
