Just saw a quick blurb from the douchebag Mike Pereira that he is counseling NFL refs on defensive holding and illegal contact.

I think this will actually bode well for us. Not just because we don't have a defensive back that can get close enough to lay a hand on a WR, but also because it frees up our WRs namely CJ.

Last time this happened 10 years ago, the defensive penalties for this kind of stuff doubled from the previous year

Illegal contact and PI penalties against us should go way up with our new offense- New Orleans always racks up a ton due to the way their offensive backs and WRs spread the field and push defenses past their coverage limits.

On defense the press-man is predicated on jamming a WR on the line, which is perfectly legal. The coaches will really have to focus on getting the CBs to jam hard, but release before the 5 yard window closes. I've seen video of a drill that has two sensors (like garage door motion detectors) set up at 4 yards that activate a loud buzzer. The idea is that CBs get used to jamming and fighting the WR for four yards and then let go at the buzzer, and, hopefully, the timing becomes ingrained without need of the buzzer...

New Orleans drew four more penalties than the Lions last year. (87 to 91. We were tied for 7th least, they were 8th.)

I am more worried about how this will impact our defense and Suh than I am excited about how this may help our offense

Shouldn't really effect Suh all that much- he's not dropping into coverage very much, if ever...

Though I didn't read the article in question, so maybe they're talking about defensive holding along the line in order to free up pass rushers, or dragging down a lead blocker?

If that's the case then the 49ers are fucked, because it's widely known that Justin Smith cheats horribly in that regard. I don't remember what blog it was on, but someone put together a "highlight" reel of him more-or-less tackling the OT across from him so Aldon Smith had a clear lane to the passer. There had to be 100 or more plays of him doing that- firing off and simply dragging the tackle to the ground by his jersey. Hopefully they start calling that shit- should be the same set of rules for everyone, even if the guy in question is an All Pro year in and year out, which is interesting because he gets voted to that post not due to his stats, but due to the "dirty work" he does in the trenches to free up his teammates. Basically he's being rewarded at the highest level for blatantly cheating... but it's cool because he's considered a great player on a great team, so not only his his cheating not penalized, it's fucking celebrated.

Most over-rated defender in the NFL, imo. Take away his ability to hold every play, make him play within the rules, and he's completely average across the board.

They most likely wont. Anytime there is a rule change of this magnitude, it tends to switch the emphasis of what it will take to be successful in the NFL.

This will be just another reason to penalize the Lions, pretty much like every rule introduced.

That thought had crossed my mind as well. Lets hope the NFL has moved on to their next whipping boys.

If it is defensive holding across the line that they are cracking down on. Expect Suh to cost us one game on something fluky that the league will look at and will change. Officially calling it the "N. Suh rule".

Hopefully, that is behind us now. We have enough misfortune without the NFL admins adding to it. Hopefully the reputation of the new staff should quell everything and we can go back to concentrating on football.
