Rule 41 - Boarding

41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.

Was it a clean check? Yes. Did the check cause Wiercioch to be thrown violently into the boards? Yes. BOARDING.

Does it count if he slides on the ice for a few feet, though? Because he hit the ice first, and then slid into the boards.

In general, though, I don't like the wording of that rule. "Throw violently" is too subjective a term. What does "thrown" mean? What is too violent? That needs to be fixed.

Well, of course, all great scientists have glasses!

Necessary things to be great in your field:
Scientist - glasses, really bad hair or balding helps tooCop - gun
Sociologist - refulsal to believe in a higher power
Doctor - extremely dramatic personal relationships, or maybe that's just on TV
Park Ranger - short green or tan shorts

I don't fit that bill right now. I have a full head of lovely hair.

Of course, I'm genetically predestined to baldness, so we'll see how long that lasts...

The check still caused him to be thrown violently into the boards, whether he slid into them or not. The referees are told how to interpret the rule. Evidently the referee thought that the degree of violence, in which Wiercioch hit the boards, was cause enough for him to call it boarding.

Then the official made the appropriate call, and my beef lies in the rule itself. I just think it's kind of unreasonable to word a rule such that a player can be penalized for something that is out of his control that happens after his play. I mean, sometimes you hit that guy the same way and he doesn't go into the boards at all. That's just got to be tough on the players.

Good, clean hit as far as I'm concerned.
