There is reason for the Rangers to consider upping the price for Moore or Odorizzi. Namely: the long-term look of the rotation. With a weak upcoming free-agent class, the Rangers can't count on anybody other than Cole Hamels, Yu Darvish and Martin Perez for the 2017 rotation.

Right-hander Colby Lewis, currently on the DL, will be 37 in 10 days and is a free agent after the year, and his medical file is thick. The Rangers have an option on left-hander Derek Holland for 2017. The cost, however, is $11 million, which is a big investment for a pitcher who has been on the 60-day DL in three consecutive seasons and who has pitched a total of 1672/3 innings in the last three years.

Moore and Odorizzi are controllable for multiple years beyond the end of this season. If the Rangers aim to avoid another pitching shortage in the future, they may have to consider adding a more perfunctory pitcher now.

Agree. It does us no good to hold onto to all these prospects when you consider the state of our pitching at the MLB and minor league level. We might as well start a rebuilding program and I do not think that is what Beltre resigned for. If everyone stayed healthy in regards to Hamels, Darvish, Lewis, Perez and AJ/Holland that would be one thing. But based on past and current events that will not happen.

Rebuild? That's crazy talk. A move is going to be made that will help this team be competitive. We will try to make the playoffs this year I'm thinking.

Ifit came across that I want us to rebuild I apologize. I was saying if we hoard all these position players and make no moves in the pitching department we might as well rebuild. But that is not what I want us to do. I want us to make a move for pitching which may cost us a high caliber prospect but not all of them.

The Chicago White Sox have suspended staff ace Chris Sale five days after his reported dispute over the team's uniforms for Saturday's game.

"Chris has been suspended for violating team rules, for insubordination and for destroying team equipment," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement on Sunday. "While we all appreciate Chris' talent and passion, there is a correct way and an incorrect way to express concerns about team rules and organizational expectations."

Sale's suspension began Saturday and runs through Wednesday. The White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Anthony Ranaudo to take Sale's roster spot during the suspension.

Ranaudo may have been a better option for us to be starting games than Lohse?

Chapman is being dealt soon. Any chance we are interested?
JD has changed his opinion on rentals but kinda doubtful in this case, I would think. But we could be mystery team.

If we were a closer away from having all the right parts, then maybe. But we've got a lot of holes to be covered.

#Rangers GM Jon Daniels says he expects Derek Holland & Colby Lewis will be ready to rejoin rotation by Aug. 20 & Aug. 21.

That seems kinda optimistic to me

I hope that "prediction" is accurate. We really need Colby's innings eating ability in the worst kind of way.

Sources: The Diamondbacks have let teams know Shelby Miller is available in a trade. Price isn't nearly what it cost them eight months ago.

I'd be game

Darvish is a FA after next season, and who knows when Hamels will start to decline? The fact is, if we did acquire Sale, the rotation wouldn't be Hamels/Darvish/Sale for very long. The prospects you speak of likely won't ever play a whole season behind Darvish with the exception of Mazara. So how are they going to have the benefit of Hamels and Darvish pitching for them as they win these championships you're predicting? Those future teams will need top of the rotation pitching, and frankly our farm looks pretty void of that. So, if we're not going to trade our prospects to acquire it, our only option is to acquire it in free agency. Now, how are we going to do that if elite starting pitchers don't want to sign in Texas as you say? Signing a bunch of #4's ain't gonna get it done to keep this team an annual contender. Maybe I mistook you not thinking your idea through for you flipping the script to suit your argument. My mistake.
The thing is we need both hitting and pitching. I would like to attempt to get Darvish here longer. I think we would have a much better chance of signing him than a ace pitcher that was on the open market. If not we should have other prospects to trade for pitching down the road.

Sale is so costly in terms of prospects due to him not costing much financially and being under contract for some time. We acquired Hamels cheaper than we are being asked for Sale, a whole lot cheaper. If we need to wait on someone like Ortiz or Tate we could always do another Cliff Lee type trade to bide our time. That trade was tremendously cheaper than what the Sale trade would cost. Sale or anyone else who would require our hitting prospects that are so very close to being ready to contribute in a big way for us is just too expensive in my opinion.

One thing to keep in mind is that by all rights we should have already won a WS championship and it didn't require a staff with two pitchers the quality of Hamels and Darvish to do so. Therefore, I think if we had the hitting along with an ace and a solid #2 and a very good bullpen that we would be fine. That is, as long as the #3 and #4 are at least decent to good.

I have thought my idea through. I just disagree with you on what path we should take for maximum success over the course of the next few years. I think we both have the same goal, but we differ on how to get there. I understood that some would disagree with what I wanted when I posted it. That is why I ended it with something to the effect of that is just how I feel.

It seems optimistic because we have been punched in the gut a few too many times by injuries. I think they are reasonable expectations though.

Rentals are a good way to go sometimes. We could make a Cliff Lee type trade fairly often and not deplete our system. Especially rentals who have big contracts that teams are looking to get out from under.
