Jay Gruden says Washington will try short kickoffs

The latest attempt by the NFL to make kickoffs safer by spotting touchbacks at the 25 may backfire. Instead of ordering Hopkins to know kick the ball out of the endzone, they'll ask him to boom kickoffs sky high near the goal line for the coverage units to pin opponents well within the 25 yard line. Hopkins has the leg to make this work. This outta be interesting. And it's the latest example showing how the NFL's shortsighted attempts at making the game safer actually incentives the opposite result.

Brilliant move by the league. In their attempt to avoid concussions they have just encouraged every team to try this.

SO we should thank the NFL, because Kickoffs just became alot more vital. Instead of only about 44% being returned, you will see teams forcing returns by pooch kicking.

If they wanted to take the kickoff out, they should have moved the touchback line BACK to the 15. That would encourage teams to try and kick it out the back of the endzone.

I hope they dont start getting cute and try dropping the ball inside the 10 on kickoffs for a nice stop around the 20 for a sweet negative 5 yard gain... Thats is if the team doesnt take it to the house... Not to mentioning injuring one of your own guys. For me the payoff isnt big enough. The gamble isnt worth it. It isnt worth the risk just to save a few yards... To much other crap can go wrong. Just kick the damn ball out of the endzone and play some defense starting at the 25 as apposed to the 15 or 20.
