According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the Redskins were "nowhere close" to completing a long-term deal with free agent Kirk Cousins coming out of last month's Senior Bowl.

La Canfora believes Washington "may very well have to apply the franchise tag" to keep Cousins from hitting the market. Cousins is a lock to ask for considerably more than the seven-year, $97.1 million deal similar-style player Andy Dalton signed in 2014 with the Bengals. In order to tag Cousins, the Redskins would have to commit to him $19.7 million guaranteed for the 2016 season.

La Canfora has no value to the Skins. I would not listen to what he has to say. I cant see why KC wouldn't want a long term deal even if he has to take less. I think we will get it done.

The tag doesn't give KC any security so I think KC would take less just to get a long term deal done.

They just started negotiating - why would anyone expect them to be close to a deal at this pt? You would expect the starting pt to be the Redskins offering a somewhat lowered bid & Cousins' agent starting pretty high - they will work it out from there - it takes a little time.

La Confora is an idiot - shocked that he still has a job.

La Canfora was outta the loop when he was the Skins beat writer. I wouldn't be surprised if he's outta the loop now. Still, many of us opined that Cousins would be hitting somewhere in the 16 mill to 20 mill a year range and 7 years/97 million is a tick under 14 mill a year. So I wouldn't be surprised if La Confora's reporting that Cuz turned that down is accurate.

As a division Rival looking on y'all got a conundrum on your hands after the RG3 issue. You like what KC has done the last 1 1/2 years but you would have liked to have seen it for longer before committing that kind of money at QB. ( Simple Math Us Cowboys fans like easy) If you hit at lets just call it 100 mil for 5 years making it 20 mil a year that is life changing money for KC however if the folks making the decision are wrong you set your franchise back for another 3-5 years minimum. Committing a 20 mil franchise tag to KC is not the best way to show trust to your QB and the leader of your offense but it could be the best option to take to make sure that your not making another miscalculation at QB.
This is the polar opposite of the old Draft when you had to pay to watch them play before they proved worth or not. Now its have we seen enough to warrant this kind of money or do we tag them to buy more time. In the end the numbers will be almost the same if you really like KC and if not he made a solid payday for the risk being taken with no long term security.

Really depends on how Management feels and the negotiations go. Will be interesting to watch

Just my :2cents:

Not really. I believe that he will be signed to a long term deal, but one that has some outs in the later years. I think that is doable & won't set the franchise back 3-5 years if Cousins somehow doesn't pan out.

Believe it or not I liked Cousins even when he was tossing INT's faster than Cowboy nation was crying this past season about if only if only. Funny, Cassel the savior could win in NE off the bench but not in Dallas... But hey yea,,, if only there qb was healthy. Back to reality. Cousins did exactly what every player playing in a contract year dreams of.. And thats to play great. Credit to Cousins and he did it all without a running game. Quite impressive to say the least. Redskins would be idiots to franchise him. Give him his 7 year incentive laden contract with easy outs. No 7 plus year contract plays out anyway. If he plays great it all gets renegotiated after 3 years anyway. Next to Brady... Cousins gets rid of the ball just as quick. A heck of a distributor... Same as Brady. Not comparing the two but theres something special about this kid. Hey, u could have it alot worse.

What i find funny about the whole Kirk Cousins thing is that people are still saying well we can over pay him

So lets tag him and pay him the $20 million we arent sure he is worth.

A long term deal where we end up in actuality paying him an average of $15-17 million over three seasons beats paying him $20 million and being in the same or worse situation a year from now.

Echoing what others have said above, LaConfora has been wrong on so many Redskins stories, I really do question how he has a job. Remember how he was reporting that it was a done deal that Vic Fangio was coming here to be the defensive coordinator?
