Some interesting points on what constitutes 'efficiency'

Excerpt

Unique performances for quarterbacks in the NFL aren’t unusual nowadays. As Robert Mays wrote for The Ringer recently, the NFL continues to move further away from run-oriented offenses. That is because coaches now see the value in relying more on a short-throw based, efficient passing game that takes advantage of modern rules that limit defensive backs.

Every quarterback appears more efficient now than he would have 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

That doesn’t mean that every quarterback is more efficient now than those who played 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

Efficiency can be a misleading term. It’s most often represented by completion percentage or yards per attempt. Or a combination of the two. You can also incorporate touchdown-to-interception ratio to get an even bigger picture of how the quarterback, or rather the quarterback’s passing game, performed in a given game.

Measuring efficiency on tape allows you to add in a couple more factors.

While the league has become more efficient on the whole, the increased workload for quarterbacks has also exposed some trends in the lesser starters in the league. So far this season, there have been a significant number of performances that featured quarterbacks repeatedly running out of or checking down from clean pockets. These plays are debilitating to an offense because they take away opportunities for receivers who run downfield regardless of the coverage.

In short: All scrambles and checkdowns aren’t created equal.

Welcome back Lloyd Carrington (to the PS). A pick in the pouring rain at practice today. Players chose to not practice in the bubble. Good for them, good possibility of rain this Sunday.

Agree or disagree on the validity of Kirk as the long term answer, some interesting points made here that have to improve.

From the Jay presser

Ari will get the opportunity to challenge for LG this week, Trent still a possible option there.

Sullivan able to come in, if needed, for Long given his experience at that position.

Dox is 'wait and see'. He just didn't feel comfortable prior to the Gnats game. Team is continuing to try different methods of treatment.

Seriously do not understand why they don't just shut him down for the correct amount of time to heal this tendinitis issue. Anything you read says rest is the only true cure for a bad case of it. And we have the offensive weapons we need if execution in the RZ gets its act together.

Jay - 'We're not trying to rush him. We're just trying to see how he's doing everyday."

That's all fine but no doubt, Dox is feeling pressure given his draft status/expectations to return quicker than is smart for him.

Again, feel like it's time for the coaches to just make the call to rest him, of course Dox is going to want to try and gut it out. That's not what's best for him or the team if he keeps come no up lame 1 week later.

jackson comes in at the #2 position for deep threat rankings

2) DeSean Jackson, Washington Redskins: For most offensive schemers and play-callers, the great white whale is a game-breaking wideout with the difference-making speed to take the top off a defense and swing momentum. Since he entered the league with Philadelphia in 2008, Jackson has been the prototypical lid-lifter, flying past defensive backs to chase down deep balls like a Frisbee-catching pooch. Despite missing six games with a hamstring injury last season, Jackson leads all NFL receivers with eight receptions of 40 or more air yards since the start of 2014.

Truly a behemoth

the picture doesnt do him justice ... you have to see him standing next to a normal human ... like McVay to truly appreciate his ginormousness ... and quick. I remember watching him warming up during the preseason game when Moses came out ... simulating snap and quickly taking 5 high steps backwards ... made an impression on me

Keim on the Oline shuffle...

For now, they’ll start Spencer Long at center -- he replaced Lichtensteiger in the second half Sunday and has worked at the position since the offseason. And they’ll start Arie Kouandjio at left guard, where he played one snap as a rookie.

“We tell them all the time you got to be ready, you got to be ready to go when your number’s called and you never know when,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “We have a lot of different options. That’s the good thing about our line -- they’re pretty flexible.”

Just in case the new starters struggle, the Redskins believe they still have options. They like how Ty Nsekhe has played at tackle, so they could always slide Williams back inside. Williams had never taken a snap at guard, even in practice, so, he admitted that he was often just “winging it.” But he moves well and reacts quickly, two traits that work inside. On two different blocks Sunday he took out two defenders – once on Jamison Crowder’s slip screen for a 55-yard touchdown and another on Matt Jones’ 12-yard run.

And if Long struggles, they can turn to newly-signed veteran John Sullivan. The former Vikings starting center said Wednesday that there’s carryover from all the systems he’s played in, but that there are parts he must learn, of course. What he’s happy about is that his surgically-repaired back doesn’t bother him. It caused him to miss last season.

The former Vikings starting center said Wednesday that there’s carryover from all the systems he’s played in, but that there are parts he must learn, of course. What he’s happy about is that his surgically-repaired back doesn’t bother him. It caused him to miss last season.

“Before that happened, I thought I could play through anything,” Sullivan said. “I was wrong. ... But at this point if you didn’t tell me I had been injured at some point, I’d never know I had the injury. I feel good.”

Long, though, is confident that he’s ready to handle the full-time duties. If he does, the Redskins could have their center of the future. Lichtensteiger will have missed a combined 24 regular-season games by the end of this season and, at 31, it’s hard to imagine the Redskins re-signing him. He took a pay cut before the season in which his contract length also was reduced, making this the last year of his deal.

But Long has to play well. He said he's comfortable at the position.

“I’m confident in my calls; it’s a really good spot for me,” he said. “I dropped a few pounds. I feel faster. I feel mentally I can handle it. I think I have a future there. If I’m asked to play guard, I can play there, too, but I’m having fun with center.”

Long is about 25 pounds heavier than Lichtensteiger. Size alone doesn’t make a center, so Long has been adjusting to new footwork and more mental demands since the spring.

“Technique-wise, it’s a whole other story from guard,” he said. “The footwork, especially when you’ve got a nose tackle beating down your neck. The whole defense shifts when you move over one spot [from guard]. It’s a different vision. You have to know the whole picture at center so mentally you go through your gymnastics and make sure you’re locked in. There are slight adjustments physically and big adjustments mentally.”

Lauvao also could be in his last season with Washington unless he recovers and plays injury-free. He missed the final 13 regular-season games in 2015 and has a $5 million cap hit in 2017, the final year of his deal. He adds power and plays with veteran savvy -- on a 33-yard completion to DeSean Jackson on Sunday, Lauvao made a saving block when, at the last second, he noticed a blitzer coming unblocked and lunged to bump him out of the way.

Kouandjio, a fourth-round pick in 2015, could either make it a tough choice on the Redskins or provide more depth, based on his play. He entered camp in the competition for this job, but trailed both Long and Lauvao.

“I’m a lot better and I can do more than last year,” Kouandjio said. “My eyes are more open -- I can pick up more and see more. I’m faster. I’m pretty confident and finally happy to show everybody.”

One player rooting for him is Williams. He’ll play where the coaches want; he obviously wants to stick at tackle.

“I really just want to play left tackle and be in my own little world,” he said. “But I have to do whatever they ask me to do.”

Giving other players a shot when they are not the best option negates the concept of competition. Black mark for Barry if this is the truth.
