While the wording of the CBA says the tag comes with two first rounders as compensation... its actually up in the air. Teams can call and try to negotiate the price down. Failing to secure an agreement from the Skins to take less, the team has one of two options.

1. The can extend Cousins an offer sheet anyway, knowing that Washington can either match it or take the picks.

2. Simply not give Cousins an offer sheet leaving Washington to eat the $24M and likely forcing us to then draft a QB early because no way do we tag Cousins a third time.

Well there is one other option.... Cousins refuses to sign the Tag tender, no one makes him an offer and the Skins are stuck much like Carolina was last year. Norman was tagged, no one wanted to give up the two first rounders PLUS $50M guaranteed, so no one even bothered to make him an offer sheet. Fast forward two months.. Norman is a Redskin and the Panthers got diddly.

So the 49ers would talk to the Redskins FIRST about draft pick compensation before even making an Official offer to KC?

Hey Shark, can KC refuse an offer sheet from another team? Lets say he is tagged and SF submits an offer sheet. Can KC say he doesn't like the deal and kill it?

So if an official offer is made to KC the 2 first round draft picks are attached to this official offer?

Sure... but let me ask you....

If you knew that even putting in an offer would cost you two first rounders, why would you put in an offer?? I know you get all nipples hard over the idea of getting that #2 pick in the draft. But seriously think for a moment..... Would you simply hand over two first round picks without trying to lower that predetermined price??

This assumes that the redskins would be willing to talk. Much like KC knowing that he is going to get 24M, washington knows they are owed 2 1sts. Not sure if there is much to talk about.

Of course they would. Just like the Broncos talked the Redskins down before they made a contract offer to Champ Bailey.

Go look at the HIstory... when was the last time a Franchise Tagged player actually went to another team and his old team got the two first round picks??

Answer.... NEVER.

that is what I said in post #81. Do the 49ers know what the draft compensation would be before they make an offer? Meaning if the SKins say sure make an offer but it will cost you 2 firsts then the 49ers make the offer its a done deal.

b/c it never involved a starting QB. This is new territory here.

Again I point to Bailey, since he is the last tagged player to actually get an offer sheet from another team and leave his original squad.

And we did not get even close to two first rounders in that deal.

Yep.... the draft pick or right of refusal only goes into effect IF Cousins signs an offer sheet from another team.

I don't know that that deal could be considered part of the Tagged process. It was basically a standard trade, wasn't it? I know I'm spitting hairs here, but I think dean is heading down a path that is not really part of the Tag process. Any team can make a trade offer for any player under contract.

Again, this is a QB we are talking about not a CB.

My whole basis to let KC walk is to get 2 first round picks for him if the contract offer is too high. Just want to make that clear.

Its only a done deal IF Cousins signs an offer sheet, which we then dont match.

So here is the thing... lets say you get your wet dream... the Niners dont even bother to call and they say we are willing to give the Skins two first rounders no questions asked. They make Kirk an offer sheet, and fuck all its a deal with $65M guaranteed over five years. The Skins look at that and say, well hell I can live with that. The Skins then simply match the offer.

So in reality the Niners wont make an offer unless they are pretty sure of

1. What they will have to give the Skins
2. That the Skins wont simply match the offer sheet and Sign Cousins any way.

And the Tag process allows for the Redskins to do that.

This I agree with. Its also why its never been done before.

NO its NOT. Tons of starting QBs have been franchise tagged. Even the non exclusive type. No one is going to make Kirk an offer without knowing that either

1. The Skins wont match the offer
2. They are going to give up LESS than the two first rounders you are so pressed to get.

Right! that is what I like about the non-exclusive tag. 65M is reasonable and the skins will sign KC and the case is closed. Im saying what if the offer is 80-90M and we get the two firsts.

So they cant offer Kc 65M b/c they know the Skins will match it. So the 49ers will make a crazy offer lets say 85M and give us 2 firsts. If that happened I say goodbye KC.

#2 is never going to happen. IF I am SM (unless I want KC gone) no matter what the offer, my response to any team is, You are going to owe me 2 1sts. Now I may actually match an offer, but if i want the player, I want to discourage any offer sheets being submitted.

I shit you not, you are like a 5 year old with ADD on a sugar high.

Why on earth would the Niners offer $90M AND give up two first rounders with no assurance that the Skins wouldnt simply match the offer??

Answer.. .they wouldnt. Kyle can afford to wait a year if the Skins play Cousins under the tag. Washington CANT afford to let him walk for nothing.
