While the wording of the CBA says the tag comes with two first rounders as compensation... its actually up in the air. Teams can call and try to negotiate the price down. Failing to secure an agreement from the Skins to take less, the team has one of two options.
1. The can extend Cousins an offer sheet anyway, knowing that Washington can either match it or take the picks.
2. Simply not give Cousins an offer sheet leaving Washington to eat the $24M and likely forcing us to then draft a QB early because no way do we tag Cousins a third time.
Well there is one other option.... Cousins refuses to sign the Tag tender, no one makes him an offer and the Skins are stuck much like Carolina was last year. Norman was tagged, no one wanted to give up the two first rounders PLUS $50M guaranteed, so no one even bothered to make him an offer sheet. Fast forward two months.. Norman is a Redskin and the Panthers got diddly.
So the 49ers would talk to the Redskins FIRST about draft pick compensation before even making an Official offer to KC?
