Great move by Cherington.
So basically, the Red Sox traded Jon Lester for the A's conditional draft pick, a 3rd rounder this year, and 5 years of Rick porcello.
Lester is making $155 million over 7 years, until he's 37. And there's a very easily reached 8th year at $20 million that makes that deal more like 8 years & $175 million.
Porcello will make $95 million over 5 years with Boston and his contract will be over when he's 30. Lester in those final 2 years will make 1/2 of Porcello's entire extension and he'll be ready to retire while Rick will be pitching for another big contract.
Fans might be balking b/c he's relatively unknown and unproven, but this is a great deal.
Last offseason, I thought the Sox wanted Lester back for 5 years and $100 million. So, in essence, they get same financial deal on a younger pitcher.
