If he doesn't play for anyone this year then this was obviously a good move. But, if he shows up on some team in a few weeks and all we saved was about $800K...I would wonder why. And don't give any arguments about the locker room blowup with Jerry, or the DWI...those were a long time ago. If they had any bearing then he should have been cut immediately. We actually restructured him AFTER the incident with Jerry if I remember correctly. If we cut him in June I wonder if we could have put Bass on the eligible to return list.

I'm interested to see who they plug in with that extra roster spot they have open. Is Jarius Wynn capable of playing DT and De? If not then why cut David Carter who I thought was playing ok?

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys waited too long to cut Jay Ratliff, but by clearing him off the salary-cap books as soon as possible by cutting him today they made the best decision for the future.

Looking back, the decision to extend Ratliff’s deal another five years in 2011 for $40 million (with $18 million guaranteed), was a poor one. Never pay age and Ratliff had just turned 30, but the Cowboys got the better end of their first extension with him: five years, $20.9 million in which he out-performed the contract.

Last March the Cowboys guaranteed $3.66 million of Ratliff’s $5 million base salary to provide salary-cap relief in 2013. The team hoped Ratliff would rebound in Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 scheme and produce at a high level even if his sack total had decreased in each of the last five seasons. He never rebounded from the injury.

Had the Cowboys cut Ratliff in the spring, they would have saved $1 million against the cap this season and been free from dead money. By cutting him now the Cowboys save $625,000 against the cap immediately but he will count $6.9 million in dead million in 2014.

Already scheduled to count $8.232 million in 2014, the Cowboys net an overall savings of $1.304 million next year.

Had the Cowboys waited to cut Ratliff after this season and designated him a post-June 1 cut to create more 2014 savings, then he would have hampered their cap in 2015.

The 2015 season means a lot to the Cowboys in terms of their cap.

Dez Bryant is set to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2014 season. If the Cowboys want, they could use the franchise tag on Bryant. The Cowboys could pick up the fifth-year option on Tyron Smith's contract, which would see his cap figure jump up close to whatever the transition tag would be for the offensive tackles, for 2015 but would like to extend him before that if possible.

Ratliff was due to count $11.02 million against the cap in 2015, so that money, in effect, can be designated for Bryant, Smith or even Bruce Carter.

The article I saw said it would be just over $10M in cap hit for next year. So much for the franchise tag savings by not applying it to Spencer.

For what we paid Spencer this year, he should sign a 1 year $1M contract as a "make good".

I read the same, although I also read it would be under $7M, so I don't know what to think.

Ford and Carl the numbers that PDay's article displays are correct I did the math yesterday and meant to post it. Ill post a screen shot of a text convo that I had with one of the individuals that works for the Cowboys media team later if I have time.

Well, I didn't speak with Stephen Jones about it, but here it is:
2014 - Now dead money
two years left of his $2M per year siging bonus = $4M
four years left of his STUPID $732K per year restructure bonus = $2.9M
Total dead money next year = $6.9M.

2014 - If we did nothing
one year of the $2M siging bonus
one year of the $732K bonus
base salary $5.5M
Total do nothing = $8.232M (savings $1.3M)

The real savings kicks in later. If we didn't cut him the cap hits would have been
2014 - $8.2M (now $6.9M, so we save a little over $1M)
2015 - $9.7M (now $0)
2016 - $8.2M (now $0)
2017 - $10.7M (now ($0)

Now of course there is no way Ratliff was going to see all of that contract anyway, so it's a little misleading. He was going to be cut eventually. This just accelerated it a little.

Hated it when Jerry gave him the extension. At some point Jerry needs to learn that signing these old player is idiotic. It was obvious to me and many that he would not be back. Rat parting comments are an act as he is hoping to dupe some other team into a contract.

ok so its all hindsight now BUT Somebody dropped the ball on this big time

After the incident in the locker room last year he should have been Jettisoned IMHO

And WTH is up with the medical staff and the injury evaluation

Getting a little old being lied to by the Cowboys on injuries Rat, Spencer, Murray last year etc

Makes me wonder what else the Cowboys are hiding

Bottom line after 30 it time to cut the ties in most cases

Just heard on talking cowboys, that Jerry may be going after Rat legally. There may be more to the DUI & accident as far as his injury is concerned.....

I agree with Colors- listening to Garrett, it sure sounded like someone had messed something up , whether Rat was hiding something or not I dont know. Todd Archer asked the question to the effect that Rat was never put on IR last year because they were saving him for a playoff run. So basically they expected him to be ready last yr. Its almost a year later.

Then something was asked why was he allowed to take the conditioning test??? I dont know if this meant he now got paid because participated in something or not. Weird situation. Hate it for our team .Damn good player when healthy
