We probably all remember the just a month or so ago, two to three of the Giants starters were rated as #1's, with only Wellemeyer falling out of the #2 category.

Currently:

Cain---------#1
Sanchez------#2
Lincecum-----#3
Bumgarner----#3
Zito---------#3

Not that the current make-up is expected or desirable, but a one, a two and three threes is still a much better rotation than most MLB teams. Filo made a good point in the other thread about this putting more stress on the bullpen. September call-ups can't come quick enough.

It's still really good overall, but what isn't is the split needed to drop from great to really good. BTW, forgot to mention these ratings are based on ERA.

GP, is it easy for you to do the same for the other pitching-rich teams in the NL? Namely SD, Atl, Phi and StL?

Wow...

Despite the recent wo's, the Giants have still put up the best rotation, 1-5, in the NL...

With the spot starters removed, Stl looks like they're the best. Then a toss up between SF and SD.

At the very least you can say STL is going to be tough to beat in a seven game series. Although never count out LaRussa to make his team too tight.

I dont mean to argue petty points, but you included Penny (1) while excluding Supan (3) and Hawksworth (4) who each only had 1 fewer start than Penny. They also had a revolving door for their true #5, which adds a lot of stress to the whole team never being confident with whom ever is pitching that fifth day, regardless how they actually performed.

the Giants have only used 7 starters this year. That needs to be factored in, I believe.

Yep, my take wasn't anything more than a very crude excising of spot starters.
