no question elvis has played himself into being expendable if a deal comes along. Choo has been a solid major league player with a good eye at the plate but IMO...we grossly over valued him and the lead off position last winter with that signing. Not many played well that were counted on coming into the season. Martin has regressed and still plays with 2 cent judgment more than he should for the time being here. Rios has hit like a punch & judy hitter all season. The outfield has been a complete let down.
None of the relief pitchers we were counting on played near the standards expected. The catching position still looks like 3 part timers to me. I see a team that has regressed greatly and it's more than injuries to me which is why I said huge off season

I agree. We need a lot more power on the corners and we overpaid for Choo. I would have rather waited until a better LF came along than to tie up so much money on a guy his age and with his limited power.

We will be weak at catcher until Alfaro gets here. It does look like we have some very good young arms for the bullpen in Claudio, Mendez, Klein and West. Maybe Rowen as well.

It will take a couple of years to fix the problems at 3 of our corner positions and what will be a fourth problem once Beltre's age shows even more than it has started to this year. In fact is will take another year just for the team to realize the problems we have with Choo and Fielder and then they have to find something to do about it.

Prince had a down year last year, he's had them before there and he's always had good health, was no reason to assume it was health related at the time, should've investigated further bc of the money not bc Fielder had a down year

Fielder's OPS was the lowest last year than it has been since his first season. His slugging was his worst ever. He also had scouts saying his bat speed had decreased. That is more than just another down season. If there was no reason to assume he was hurt simply because he had never had injury problems before then it should have been assumed that he was starting his decline and he should have been avoided because of that. The lack of previous injury doesn't really mean he couldn't be hurt though since his bat speed indicated something was wrong.

Had he been a free agent and we had taken a gamble on him for a one year contract that would have been one thing, but to trade for him with so much time remaining on his contract was simply a very bad decision on JD's part.

I basically said this, you just reiterated my point. The money involved alone should've been a reason to check out Fielder thoroughly, despite the fact that he hasn't had any health issues previously. The down season was just icing on the cake.

Big off season for JD.

Fair or not....he has something to prove with Nolan out and he can't afford another off season like the last one

Actually, rather than chasing the dragon of 2015 the best thing JD might do is to build for 2016.

Very strategic way to approach 2015 IMO.

We still just have too many questions to be answered for next year to be overly bold in FA signings.

Is Prince going to be 90% of the hitter he once was?.....Is Odor our 2nd baseman for next year? If so, what does this do for Profar?.......Are we going to start the 3rd base transition next season, or wait of the damn to break and react?...........Is Choo even capable of playing the OF when healthy?.....Do we offer Rios?.........Is Martin making progress late in this season?.....Is Holland recovered?....There's more of course.

Our catching situation is not weak. We are as well equipped there as most teams actually. Chirinos is one of the best throwing catchers in baseball, is getting better at working the pitcher, and Soto is adequate as the backup. Actually, we're probably better off than 2 outta 3 teams in MLB at this point IMO.

You're already counting Claudio to contribute here next season. Why is this? He's been one of those very surprising overachievers at every level with soft toss junk. I wish him/us the best on this, but to think he's going to be a part of a winning situation in the BP is way out on the limb to me.

Why would you not list Klein instead of Claudio?

I did list Klein. I am counting on Claudio contributing in the future. He may or may not be here for very much of next season. I will take a guy who "overachieves" at every level. At some point the use of the word "overachieve" becomes less and less accurate if he keeps doing it. I like a guy who gets results at every level no matter what he is throwing. I do think most of the young relievers that I mentioned will contribute next season, but I am really lookign forward to what they can do beyond next season when we finally have a chance to compete again.

I did leave out Knebel and I think he will be a contributor in the future as well.

You have a lot higher opinion of Soto than I do. To each his own. I am very happy with Chirinos and think he is the best we have currently. I do think he needs to be a backup when we go to another WS.

My oversight on Klein......sorry.

I just see no future at all for Claudio over the long haul. I mean zero.

I do think more of Soto than you do, which is fine. Part of the reason we're all here I suspect. But I think if you look at the quality of catching in MLB today, you'll see the combo of Soto/Chirinos does quite well.

But like you said, it's just one's opinion vs the other. No biggie

I'm pretty content with a soto/chirinos combo.
