Bad luck? Was called a WP ... but the ball hit him in the glove. ML catcher has to make that stop with a runner on 3rd in the bottom of the ninth.

His techique was good he moved and dropped his body down to block it. It just bounced off the heel of his glove. Tough ball for any catcher.

Sure ... if you say so.

I never would have said anything but had to respond when you called it bad luck. Luck plays nothing in it. The ball didn't bounce off a stationary glove ... he was moving is glove to catch the ball rather than have it bounce against his chest. He simply didn't make the play. Blocking a ball in the dirt is Day 1 in catching school.

You find it impossible to be objective don't you?

It's easy in the face of:

Offensively: .216/.284/.309/.593 ... .263wOBA ... -0.5WAR (MY is only other with a negative WAR)

Defensively: -14 Rdrs/yr ... 15WP (compared to Napoli's -8 and 12 in 22% more innings)

He's gone at the end of the season. He's not going to get a 2013 job even as a backup. TEX signing him early in the 2010 off season to a two year deal for four times what SDP paid him is one of JD's worst moves.

I wasn't talking about his season. I was talking about that play. He did everything he could to block it. Wasn't his fault it got away. Quit posting stats that have nothing to do with what we're talking about. We're talking about one specific play.

Okay... I understand what you say ... but my point is that his track record is that when he catches pitchers have a higher number of WPs compared to when Napoli catches. That says something.

As for this specific play ... he called for the breaking ball low ... and was not crossed up by the pitch in the dirt. The ball hit the heel of his glove as he was trying to catch it ... rather than letting the ball hit him in the chest and keeping it in front of him with Smoak (a slow runner) on 3b ... so not coming home with the ball in front of him.

IMO ... it should have been called a PB. Were it not for the fluke PO of Saunders by Nathan after MY booted the play ... YT's (WP/PB) play might have cost TEX the game.

He dropped his glove between his legs to close that hole down. Anyone with an open mind can see that was an attempted block. Not an attempted catch. It bounced up off the dirt and hit the heel of his glove.

That said, you're right. He does typically try to stab at pitches in the dirt instead of catching them. This wasn't one of those times though.

You are right ... as relates to YT I do not have an open mind. With his -0.5WAR ... he's justified my view.

If TEX doesn't make a move for a catcher before the deadline ... I'd rather see Luis Martinez up. He isn't going to be any worse and could potentially be better both offensively and defensively.

Without quality catching ... TEX will have a tough time in the post season replicating what it did the past two seasons. Without Benjie taking charge in 2010 and Napoli's tear in the second half of 2011 ... TEX would have fallen short those years too.

Do you want to depend on Napoli duplicating 2011? Or would you prefer TEX chances if it makes a move to upgrade either #1 or #2 Catcher?

That depends on the cost.

Of course ... but if you are clearly in the market to develop options to improve your rotation ... or in some circles finding another corner bat ... how can you not view that the catching situation (standard need for strength up the middle) as a limiting factor when considering those other costs?

The principle is the same. The person receiving the hit always absorbs the brunt of the hit.

Guess this isn't football where both guys are wearing pads ...

SEATTLE -- Rangers catcher Mike Napoli left Friday's 3-2 win after eight innings with a bruised quad muscle on his right leg. He is questionable for Saturday's game against the Mariners.

Napoli injured the leg sliding into home plate trying to score from second on Ian Kinsler's single in the fifth inning. He was thrown out by left fielder Casper Wells as he slid hard into catcher Miquel Olivo.

He stayed in the game for four more innings behind the plate before Yorvit Torrealba took over in the ninth.

"I tried to stay in the game, but I couldn't take it any more," Napoli said. "I was squatting on it and putting pressure on it."

That's because he slid rather than knocking the hell out of Olivo.

Napoli has played 22% more innings, and has essentially the same defensive numbers after you factor in the additional playing time

Honestly I can't wait until YT and Lowe are gone so I don't have to hear your BS about them anymore

Good Play of the Night: Kirkman's backhand of the ball lined to him and recovering to get the force at the plate.

Bad Play of the Night: MY tripping over 1b and not having his foot on the bag to make the force out of Saunders which turned into run #5.
