Scott Lucas had some good things to say about 20-year-old Yohander Mendez who has 67 strikeouts and only 13 walks this year in 58 innings with Hickory.

His line yesterday:
SP Yohander Mendez: 5 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 1.40 ERA

Mendez continues to produce one of the finest seasons I can recall, albeit on a restricted workload. In 58 innings, opponents are hitting .211/.262/.269 with no homers and a 29% strikeout rate.

I've been keeping my eye on him. He's shooting up our prospect rankings

I have followed him somewhat. The only thing I would be weary of is the walks. In 58 innings the 13 walks may not seem like much but in the minors the guys are free swingers at times because they are trying to make it to the bigs and hitting is a big part of it plus they are not as disciplined. I really would like to see some strike throwers come up thru the ranks and hope he is one.

I don't expect a whole lot from Mike at this point and I wasn't sure how JD would get it done but I had him as one of the top options JD might choose for a RH bat. Now we shall see if Daniels considers making him an offer for next year, though I'm not sure w Gallo possibly being a half a year guy or more next season, that will happen

It didn't make sense to me if all you were going to do was take Mitch or Prince's bat out of the lineup

But since the investment is low, might as well platoon him with Moreland and spell Fielder on occasion, it balances the lineup a little more

But finding someone to platoon with Choo would have made more sense, as he's been awful against LHPs, but I guess at this point Strausborger will get a chunk of those starts going forward now that Rua is in AAA, and that works for me too, he couldn't get it going in his 1-2 starts a weeks he might have gotten, Straus has been playing more regularly this year and is probably in more of a groove

Lets see he handles it, means he might be in the majors some time next year, might need to cutting some of the fat in the OF, Choo has looked better recently but he's still useless against LHPs and gets paid too much money for that to be the case

Next year should be an interesting transition year young guys and bad contracts
