RIP.....

kid: "Sir, what should I practice?"

"I had never seen the young man before," Howe said. "I told him the standard I live by is you have two eyes and one mouth. Keep one shut and the other two open. (The kid) repeats it to this day."

The kid was Wayne Gretzky.

When Gordie signed his first contract with the Detroit Red Wings (1,700 dollars), his bonus was a team jacket.

Gordie Howe had only 22 fighting majors in his pro hockey career.

Tough as he was he mostly stuck to playing the game.
And he only had two Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.

The man has always been and will always be larger than life.

RIP, Gordie. The most complete player to ever lace the skates. Gretzky was the greatest scorer, but Howe was the greatest player.

Agree re Gretzky. I am a big Bobby Orr fan, and I have a tough time saying who was better Orr or Howe. I usually punt on the decision, rationalizing that they played different positions.

But the obvious difference is longevity. So yes, Mr. Hockey is the best player ever.

Guy who works for me (from MI) just told me a story. He was at the airport in Montreal a few years ago, waiting in line to get through US Customs to get back to Detroit. He was about 20th in line, and Mr Howe was a few behind him. When he and some others recognized Gordie, they told him "You shouldn't be waiting in line". Mr. Howe said "no, I am no different from anyone else, I will wait my turn". The line then all moved aside until he walked past them to the front.

Just one of many many stories about his class.

I was fortunate to be able to see him play with the Whalers as a hockey obsessed kid.
I hope the NHL retires #9 permanently.
Even Wayne Gretzky cells him the greatest player ever.

Everyone in this area seems to have a "Gordie Howe story. I do too.

Not long after I moved to MI, I went to a Detroit Vipers game played at the palace of auburn hills. They announced that Gordie Howe was going to drop the ceremonial first puck. I was in a suit with a shit ton of people and the place got quite and I asked the question "who the hell is Gordie Howe?" I thought I was going to get my ass kicked.

Then I said "Oh yeah, he played for the Houston Aeros". Most people in the suit did not know/remember that.

This is tough.......I've thought about this day for years, he was my second sports hero after Al Kaline. Got to see him play for 8-9 yrs. before he retired, I became a hockey nut when I was 12 yrs. old. I also caught him twice at his hockeyland in St. Clair Shores.

RIP Gordie, and thanks for some of the finest sports memories of my life.

TS We've definitely chewed up some of the same ice, Gordie Howe Hockeyland was the first barn I played on a team. I met Gordie, Sid and Ted there. We started to like the 5am practices because on several occasions Ted and Gordie would be in the upstairs concession stand watching. All three of them signed my MAHA card in 66.

It was such an honor to have met him, one occasion at the Joe during his book signing, the crowd was short so I brought-up the arena and meeting him back then, he straighten-up with a big smile, we talked for about 10 minutes. we shook hand after and he about broke my finger!!

My number one sports hero is gone to the age, R.I.P Gordie, you will be missed. :sigh:

Prayers and thoughts for the family.
