I know this thought must have passed through many of our minds but I'm not sure we've ever had a long discussion thread about it .....

I love Wilson and I love the attitude he brings along with him - but - with Romo (not to mention Castillia) safely in our pen do we consider the unthinkable - trade Wilson - as long as he's healthy I'm guessing he could bring some real good value

Actually this has been debated already, I think it's a very real possibility, but with a ton of factors (for Sabean) to consider:

1. Can Romo really close? Not all setup men have the stuff/temperament to
2. Can Hembree? Casilla?
3. How is the team doing? If we are winning rings again, don't we have to keep the band together?
4. Are we keeping the 2 'aces' (Tim, Matt) or dealing them before losing them to FA? If so, shouldn't we go all in and deal Wilson too and really reload?
5. The most important factor is Brian's performance obviously...if he comes back and has another great year like this one it's one thing, if he starts to come back to earth it's another

For me there are definitely ways it could play out where I'd like to see him dealt, and there are others where I wouldn't. So for now I guess it's wait and see how 2012 goes...

GMing aint easy

Yesterday's game is what made me stop and think. The pen was down right filthy. IMO both Romo and Castilla have the technical tools to be closers. But as you stated, I'm not sure about the mental side of the equation. Wilson just exemplifies the "just give me the f''cken ball' and let's get this done. Not all RP actually have that mind set. Some may have the mind set but don't possess the tools. I also feel that 2012 will set the tone for what will happen. I believe that Sabean will try and revamp to the tune of 'let's go to the playoffs'. He will keep as many of the current 'pieces' that he deems are necessary and try and fill in the rest. If 2012 doesn't work out I think we see a move to rebuild. I think he lets 1 of the two aces go in a trade. Maybe both. If that does happen I agree that Wilson also gets packaged as well. I think that the window for our current pitching structure is closing. If we are going to maximize it, it has to be now. The issue is we need offense without damaging our current pitching structure. Chez is expendable but I'm not sure what his value really is. I just don't see many options to acquire some offense without giving back some of our pitching in return. Bully or SP, it has to come from somewhere. I remember the ESPN board whereb the theme was to package up everything we didn't want (our garbage)and ship it to another team for one of their top players. I think all of us over here realize that will not work in today's market. I think 2012 will be a defining year for the direction this franchise takes. But I have been part of our 2010 season and for that I will be forever grateful.

You may be right, but I doubt it. I don't see Sabes letting Tim, Matt, or Madison walk. To a lesser extent, I don't see him letting Brian walk either.

I wouldn't count on Romo all that much. Bochy babied him all season long and he still had elbow problems. But Casilla, yeah, the guy has some nasty stuff when he's on. Of all the Giants "stars," Wilson is probably the most expendable, so I think it's "thinkable" to move him for a position of need (C, CF, SS, 2B) .

Just a nit pick, but C is no longer a position of need. 2011 is over, and we have Posey in '12 with Joseph, Chez3 and Susac knocking on the door in the coming years.

2B, SS and CF, ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY!!!

wow :(

The fact that this is written by ANYONE is a sad, sad point...

(and not completely unreasonable, either)

I just can't imagine coming back from three ligament tears and then spending 3 hours squatting, 5 days a week, for 6months. Most realistic scenario is it takes him until the end of the 2012 season to be able to handle the position full time.

I HOPE you are wrong, but it does make sense.

But you aren't a 23 year old professional squatter with the best medical and rehab money can buy either. Just sayin'.

No question it might be an issue, but I think it will be basically ok. Maybe the backup guy will have to do 2 days a week not 1.

Dude, really? Hey, we don't know the future, you may be right. I'm still going with there's a lot of smart people and $$ devoted to getting him out there again.

A bit of a Nirvana Fallacy there? Ideal scenario: you go into 2012 with a catcher who can start (with positive WAR), and if Buster proves he's fully back, you can flip that player during the season.

I think the reality will lie somewhere in between the two scenarios. Posey will catch 4 days a week, take one day off, and play 1b once. The backup C will catch about 50 games...I'm hoping it's Chez3.

Me too, looks like that that kid can hit. It's nice to have someone with a cannon back there (Stewart) but batting .200 ain't cutting it. It's close to having 2 pitchers in the lineup every game and we can't be having that crap next season!

If they aren't seriously considering Sanchez as the backup they need to go get someone who can provide something on offense especially if Buster can't squat back there more than 4 times a week. We cannot have a lineup with basically two pitchers in it 3 days a week for an entire season (compounded even more if our starting SS is also a .190 -.240 hitter).
