How much do you people know about Comcast? I admit I know very little about them.

I was reading that they bought yet another company and as far as I know are the largest cable system in the country.

They seem to have a commitment to sports and was wondering if they may enter the arena to challenge Disney.

I have always thought that if someone came along with big buck's they could give ESPN a real run for their money because they are a shadow of what they once were. It's more gossip than sports.

Any thoughts on this?

Thank's in advance.

i thought of this before. well, kinda. here in philly we have comcast sportsnet. verizon fios is the only other tv provider allowed to carry that channel. comcast owns the rights to a lot of flyers, phillies, and 76ers games. because we get comcast though, we also get to watch games that are in other parts of the country that are also played on comcast. so throughout the year i get to watch caps, hawks, and sharks games. they play them every once in a while. mostly on the comcast network.

as far as i know, each comcast area has their own sports show as well. in philadelphia we get daily news live which is way better local sports coverage than anything else in the area. comcast is growing at a large rate and i seriously think they will keep going and start to obtain the rights to a lot of teams. in philadelphia we get comcast sportsnet and the comcast network. on the comcast network they show out of market games. if more and more markets switch to comcast then i could only imagine how many out of market games there will be.

Thanks scott good reply. I know you don't have a definitive answer but as far as your gut feeling goes, do you think they would consider a "Sports NetworK ?

they kind of already have 1 in each area. it consists of, showing sports, a show based on the local paper, and a show called sportsnight or sportsrise where the just tell you what is going on in sports. it is mostly local though. i think in a few years they could make a national network. i think it would already be better than vs. who knows by the time the contract with vs is up comcast might have a station and they would possibly be the favorites to get the contract.

Maybe they should just pull a WalMart and just stomp out the competition. :)

Been a while since I walked the gilded hallways, but Comcast brass has always had a hard-on for two things:

Beating ESPN
Offering NFL Sunday Ticket.

They've gone after both with such ham-handed voracity that pissed the NFL off to the point of the NFL nearly signing a "for life" deal with Direct TV. The Vs cock-block is what sealed it. NFL and Direct TV are close. They have made a lot of money off each other over the years.

They also thought that they could land the NHL, change outdoor life to a "Sports" channel and they would immediately own a big spot near ESPN on the radar. But they failed to land other sports bigger than rednecks riding cows and the countries' biggest spec racing series and then failed to come up with anything to compete with ESPN's bread and butter, the newsdesk show. The best they have is another lame ass "soup" show and their daily line show which is much more interested in kissing Ice Cube's ass than talking sports.

When ESPN Changes ESPNU to ESPN3 in the fall, loads up on college sports and eventually lands the Tour De France.... Vs will have to come up with a plan.

And keep in mind that this is all after they tried to buy Disney and were told to pound sand.

As Fiber service reaches more and more areas, traditional CATV operators are going to hurt. My local cable Op doesn't even offer NHL Network at all. That's why I have Direct TV. And now that I have it, it will take a lot for me to switch at all.

i forgot comcast pretty much owns vs.

as far as direct tv, there are 2 reasons i do not want it. one is that we had it at a place i worked at and it was always out. whenever the weather got bad it was out.

the second, comcast owns a portion of the flyers. they also own the rights to a ton of flyers and phillies games. they own rights to hawks, sharks, and caps games as well. the more and more places they go the more and more rights to games they will get. and the thing is, the do not let direct tv show the games. if you are in the philadelphia area and want to watch a flyers game you get 2 choices, comcast and verizon fios. if you have the nhl network on direct tv then the game will be blacked out.
