Does anyone want him? I have to say, I am shocked. I thought he would be the next domino to fall after Albert was signed by the Angels.

I have really never seen in my time watching Baseball a supposed "Big Fish" like Prince Fielder take this long to be snapped up & signed.

I wonder if Prince may have over estimated his value?

Thoughts...

Burgh.

Boras probably has overpriced him as he was expecting to get a Pujols type deal (which was a very stupid deal btw) and there's just not that many teams that need a 1b for that kind of money. Think about it. Yanks= Tex, Boston= A-Gon, Angels= Pujols, Cubs= rebuilding.

The only teams in the conversation are Washington, Seattle (lol), and maybe Texas. Boras is playing things smart right now. He knows if Texas fails to sign Darvish they'll be looking for a plan B, and expects Texas and Washington to drive the price up. The market will pick up the middle of next week for Fielder.

There's a short but illuminating article in today's P-G about Fielder. It states that the Brewers list Fielder at 5' 11" and 275 pounds ("but he appeared to be heavier"). That compares to his dad's listing of 6' 3" and 230 pounds. Yes, I believe that Cecil Fielder was heavier than 230, but with 4 more inches of height, he could handle it better.

At any rate, Prince's body, plus his dad's rapid decline after age 32, suggest that it would be eminently stupid for any team (certainly any NL team) to accede to Boras's demands for an 8-10 year deal. Prince will be 28 in May. My guess is that he'll be out of baseball in less than 10 years.

The article also states that the "most interested" teams are Texas, Seattle, Washington, and the Cubs. I'm betting that Fielder will sign with an AL team (most likely Texas) but for less money and fewer years than Boras is currently demanding.

MLB Notebook: Market for Fielder remains cool

If there's still one out there willing to do that. People think Texas will, but I guarantee Texas won't go over 6 years if they do get involved. The nationals are the only team who are involved that is capable of throwing stupid money at him, and I wouldn't put anything past them.

Nats and Mariners seem probable, wouldn't be surprised about the Rangers, Orioles and Blue Jays, and I could see the Yanks signing him to DH.

Mags is probably right about Fielder. 10 years sounds dangerous for a guy his size.

Fielder won't sign as a dh. He wants to be a starting 1b. Even the Yankees aren't dumb enough to throw that money at a dh.

This is just my opinion, but if there isn't any other team out there willing to go over 6 years for Fielder, the Brewers are probably going to get back into the mix on him. They would probably be willing to go out to 8 years for him, but wouldn't be able to give the biggest dollar per year amount. Wether he signs for 6 years or 8 years, this is probably his only chance to get a huge payday, so it would come down to something like $140 million for 6 years or $160 million for 8 years. I don't see any other team willing to go out to 8 years, so I really think those would be his best options.

I also still think the Pirates should jump into the bidding for him, what is it going to hurt, there is a 99% chance he won't sign with us regardless, and we could push the price up for other teams. If he did sign with us, it wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing.

Whatever the case, I don't see why a team wouldn't take a chance and sign him on a front loaded deal, he probably wouldn't like it, but money is money and $20 million today is actually worth more than $20 million in 9 years. You could also give him an opt out after 6 years when his production should start to decline and his salary would also begin its decline.........win/win IMO.

Anyway, just rambling here in this Monday morning.

In reality there is no difference, he's getting paid to hit either way.

There is a difference. His bat is certainly his money maker, but you don't give 130+ million to a guy to just swing a bat that doesn't fill a position. Fielder is used to playing 150+ games in the field too. He wants to play his position.

AL teams, that are in contention, can always pick up a 35-40 yo slugger to play DH for half the price of paying Prince. One of the few exceptions was Bosox who threw a lot of $ at ortiz and it really caught up with them as they didnt have the flexibility financially even tho they have deep pockets, to get some of the other pieces they needed.

You seem to be saying that it's your opinion..... and you appear to have no facts or data or sources to back up that opinion.

I now count 5 posts of yours in this thread..... which include a whole bunch of opinions/assertions..... along with no facts or data or sources to back up any of them. As such, your unsubstantiated assertions are eminently unconvincing to me.

Perception wise I see your point, but no matter the perception he isn't getting paid to play the field, he brings negative defensive value at first freaking base.

prince is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

whoever signs him is guaranteed to regret it toward the end of the deal. He's got enough leverage to force a long deal and he's got enough pounds on him to suck at baseball long before the deal is over.
If someone told me we were in the running for him I'd say that I'd prefer to not sign him and endure losing seasons now rather than be stuck with his contract later.

He's an average defensive 1b. People just assume that because he's fat he's a defensive liability. I would wager those who believe that haven't watched him play on a regular basis. Is he going to win a gold glove? No. But he's not going to be a gaping hole either.
