On the surface, my first thought was that KC can get a much better deal on the open market. But if there is ever a guy that might give a home town discount, it would be him. First, he has to feel a huge debt to Gruden. Gruden basically stuck his career on the line for KC this year. That has to go a long way with a guy like KC. Second, this offense fits him perfectly. It's all based on timing and quick passes. He goes somewhere else and he runs the risk that he gets stuck in an offense that doesn't suit his skills. Having said that, they need to be careful that they don't lowball him too much and insult him. I think I'd wait a few more weeks to see how he fares. If he continues to show improvement through the next few games, then make him an offer but don't get into negotiations with him during the season. Make the offer fair but not overly onerous. I like the sound of a 3 year deal.
I agree, IF he continues, he may be able to get a better deal. Maybe not. This is right along the lines of McCown contract...a little better actually. It gives him more money and more in guarantees. You also throw out the guarantee of being the starter...a handshake deal.
At this point, it isn't insulting at all. That is questionable starter pay and it isn't a real long contract. It is a contract that allows him to outperform it and get mega-paid later.
