I'd recommend at least one level of the scavenging perk. That will help with your ammo issues. And get the local leader perk as soon as you can afford it. Building scavenging stations at all your outposts and being able to share stuff between them makes your worries about modding raw materials a thing of the past.

Those don't seem like real valuable perks, but they actually are pretty great.

Depending on what the requirements are for the scavenging perk it may take a while for me. My charisma is pretty low right now and I'd have to level up a handful of times before I can get the local leader perk.

I believe scavenger is Luck-2.

I use .308 for my combat rifle (I have a .50 cal sniper-rifle) and my shotgun mostly, and have really been running into ammo issues recently. I am considering throwing 1 perk there for one of my upcoming levels.

My main sidekick Dogmeat. I haven't really used anyone else. Listening to everyone makes me think I may have to change it up. Thought about getting that supermutant to join me or the Piper.

As for Convenant I jacked that one up...maybe. It was a deal I just knew...damned it you do, damned if you don't.

I have the Scavenger perk as well and at least for me ammo isn't a problem nor is bottlecaps. I got so much.

A good alternative to upgrading your lockpick skill is getting Cait as a companion. She can pick any non-Master locks.

I'm cruising along at level 60. Stil using my Overseer's Guardian as my main weapon, it has a 161 damage, it eats Super Mutants for dinner. Trying to finish up Valentine's long quest.

Me too! It's definitely kick-ass! I also just got an enhanced Gauss rife. Not quite as practical but I still like it.

I'm closing in on the point where I have to commit to one faction.

A fully enhanced gauss rifle does over 300 damage. Ammo is really expensive and scarce, so I only use it for legendary opponents. Puts them down easily.

I have McCready's perk, which basically means that if I see your head, it is at 95%, regardless of gun or distance. I can pretty much one-shot legendarys now (especially if I use my 2X crit shot).

I use the French shotgun for the rare times when you're going to go into combat in real time. It's great against those highest level robots forinstance. You can't really miss with it, and you can trigger off 20 shots before reloading.

Swarmed by a bunch of higher level zombies? It's invaluable.

Vats weapon? Meh.

And they're slow. Good for that first shot but the inevitable follow up by the rest leaves you vulnerable. Still they DO pack a punch! (I don't have that McCready perk)

I end up using my enhanced .308 combat rifle and my suped up assault rifle a lot.

What weapons do you guys travel with? What armor?

My 3 weapons are...

Mighty .50 Sniper Rifle (Mighty = +25% damage; .50 Receiver; max everything except w/ Compensator)
Assassins Advanced Combat Shotgun (Assassins = +50% against humans; max everything, suppressor, no sight)
Irradiated .308 Combat Rifle (Irradiated = +50 pts rad damage; short ported barrel, recoil comp stock; suppressor)

Armor
Commando Helmet (10% reduction in AP cost in VATS)
Powered Polished Metal Chest Plate (increased AP refresh)
Martyrs Polished Metal Left Arm (Slowes time at 20% health)
Chameleon Shadowed Combat Armor Right Arm (basically makes me invisible - too powerful)
Bolstering Shadowed Combat Armor Left Leg (increased DR based on health)
VATS Enhanced Shadowed Combat Armor Right Leg (10% reduction in cost in VATS)

All armor is lighter build and shadowed.
