allowing his hits when he was in Japan would be like adding someone's Arena Football League stats to his NFL stats

When was that?

He set the mark in 85... He was the manager, but his OBP was .394 (best on the team, 4th in the NL). Why would any manager bench their #1 player at getting on base? His last year in the league you could argue he wasn't up to par, but he benched himself a LOT that year.

I'd have used the Indians and beaten your ass like you stole something.

Seriously though, that was the best fucking baseball game ever. Today's games are too damn complicated for me. I've got a job, a wife and two kids 5- and 6-years old - I have virtually no time for video games and when I do, I don't want to spend it trying to figure out which of the 30 buttons on the controller throws a fastball.

I still have an old N64 and that game, but if you put it on today's HD TVs it looks like complete shit.

Yeah it was between them or the Mariners... I went with the Mariners because of Griffey... Plus I made my guy the shit... I was better than anyone!

Actually I still have my nintendo somewhere, I want to play the game again! and Yes it was one of the best games EVER but you are right, by today's standards on todays TV you could barely see it. HAHA

He was also a subpar player in '80 and '82-84. Even with a .395 OBP in 1985, he slugged just .319 and a 99 OPS+.

Agree but he wasn't managing in Philly or Montreal those years you bring up. He was playing badly (but came on strong for that WS run).

But if your point is that he got the record because he was managing himself, then you have to look at 1984-1985 WHERE HE WAS MANAGING.

And there he was playing really good ball. Not sure what OPS+ exactly is, but Pete Rose in those two years (the year and a half he was a manager up till he broke the all time hit mark) had a higher OPS+ than what Ichiro's average OPS+ has been the past 10 years. His slugging% in that time was higher than Ichiro's post Seattle career.

Just saying if a Manager should have cut him loose for a 99 OPS+ but since it was Rose he didn't, what should they have done with Suzuki, at 86, 93, 82, 77, 89 and 57 over 6 of the past 7.5 years?

Yup, not a great year, barely top 5 in hits and runs scored. But Pete Rose wasn't managing that team. He wasn't calling his own number which is the part of the post I am debating against.

Where as I do respect japanese baseball, and calling people like Ichiro in 2001 "rookies" is a bit absurd, its pretty clear you'd have to merge records if you wanna do this. You can't have it both ways.

P.S. i'm not a fan of Pete Rose, but this is bs.

Why, in the sweet fuck, would we count hits he got in Japan?

If hits from Japan count, I think Ichiro needs to give his 2001 Rookie of the Year trophy to CC Sabathia, and Hideo Nomo needs to give his 1995 ROTY trophy to Chipper.

This is one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever read. Clearly, sports writers have too much time on their hands. There's literally no justification to this story.

I don't think anyone is implying that Ichiro's Japan hits count. Even Japan isn't saying that.

Still, getting that many hits is an incredible feat and I will say Japan has some decent competition and I feel average/hits comparison from MLB/Japan is more comparable than home runs for example.

That said, I think Rose needs to calm down. It's a noteworthy moment for a guy who still reached 3,000 after starting his MLB debut pretty late and a fun milestone to put up. Nobody is going to call Ichiro the MLB hit leader, because he's not and clearly Miami didn't because they put 'Japan included' up there. Nothing wrong with a stadium recognizing two great players to play the game. Nobody would've cared 20 years ago before everything now gets posted on the Internet and social media. Think Pete is just pissed off he's still not in the HOF (which I think is ridiculous... he should absolutely be in as a player).

Also, who is calling him Hit King? Yahoo sports, lol? That's the first site that came up when I googled it.

Pete is still the King. Ichiro hits don't count in Japan. Thats like saying a basketball player playing over seas counts towards his points.

So dumb.

If Ichiro's Japan hits count so does Pete's 427 minor league hits.
