Gonch's greatest value on the PP at this stage in his career was his blistering shot from the blueline. Gogo at least has some semblence of that skill, as displayed just now.

For as valuable as Gonchar was on the powerplay, he was a liability 5-on-5 defensively and couldn't be used as a penalty killer. Martin is a better fit for this team, I think.

I don't agree with that statement... I don't think I ever saw Gonch with his eyes anywhere but up when skating up the ice.. he may have been slow coming up, but he knew what he wanted to do and did it... Gogo seems indecisive... still young, still learning... but you have to get the puck in the zone and allow your teammates to set up befoire he can use his shot... he should be on the PP, but not leading the rush up. Letang had that job until the past two games when he decided to continuously pass the puck to the other team. Between Gogo, Martin, and Letang, one of them will step, too much talent for all of them to be horrible PP Qbs... but right now.. not too good.

No one is denying Gonchar's powerplay skill, but the PP sucked with him. Yes, it sucked more without him, but it's hard to believe the Penguins powerplay will be worse this season. I think they can probably pull off 20th again (I think that's what they were...don't feel like looking it up).

Kovy looks like dick out there. Really liking what Letestu brings to the table.

And I'm also kind of confused about why Martin is getting booed. Didn't know there were hard feelings there.

I'm probably in the minority, but I believe the loss of Gonchar is going to hurt more than people think. Most that I've spoken to feel that Letang, Goligoski or Martin will fill the void without missing a beat. I think they're all adequate point men...Gonchar was better than adequate.

Gonchar's greatest addition was on the powerplay, where the Pens sucked last year. Under the assumption that their powerplay couldn't get any worse, losing him isnt' as significant. I think guys like Letang and Gogo can replace quite a bit of his skating and puck-moving ability, at a cheaper cost and lower risk of injury.

Lol Pix, I was thinking that right after he scored...it seems to be my luck that when I make a comment about a player, the said player does something to prove me wrong! Go figure...Anyway, the comment I made was really in reply to your post about the anemic powerplay. I just feel Gonch still has more to offer than the other options. Time will tell.

If I changed "Gonch's greatest value" to "One of Gonch's values", would that make my post more aggreeable to you? :) I inadvertently detracted from my point of comparing their shotmaking abilities from long distances.

I think the Pens powerplay needs to employ the Phoenix Suns style of offense: shot within 15 seconds or less. They are WAY too patient and it's not working.

Lou says that the Devs are going with 15 skaters today

wow, that's fucked up for three games into the season.
at least Calgary had a valid reason a couple of years ago.

why is MAF on the bench? it doesn't seem to be a particularly compressed time in the schedule.

Not sure but he let in a really weak winning goal late against Montreal.

Additionally, he played like shit against NJ last year. I think it has more to do with that, but if they had gone 2-0, he might be in there. Bylsma does throw Johnson in there from time to time even when the schedule isn't compressed because he likes to give him some time and Johnson is a capable backup.

A little bit of a communication breakdown... I never questioned Gogo's shot, he has a good one... my complaint with him thus far is him carrying the puck up the on ice on the PP... Gonch also has a good shot, but more important, he had confidence lugging the puck up the ice.. something it appears Gogo does not have, based on his indecisions with the puck. I really don't care about Gonch, he's a Sen... I'm more concerned that right now we do not have the puck carrying skater on the powerplay... I don;t care who it is, but someone needs to step asap. someone needs the confidence of being the last man while also carrying the puck.

i think I heard staggy or errery say that coach wanted to get fleury into 7 of the first 10... I assume that means johnson gets 3 of the first 10.
