If I knew this I didnt remember, was looking around today and found out that MLB's new national tv contracts start next year, with an annual increase of 740 million. This money gets split equally among all teams.

740/30 is right at 25 mill per team.. This is probably going to lead to the craziest free agency year ever.

Assuming our current 68 million dollar payroll is somewhere near, but under , our break even point, we might be looking at a 100million dollar payroll in the very near future.

IF the Pirates are going to add all of that $$$ to the payroll (aka 95mill payroll next year), what do you think the Pirates should do?

The bad news is we really don't have a young player worthy of an extension imho. I guess Walker would be the only one to even think about, but he will be 31 when his 6 years is over... To early for Marte...

I think I would offer Wandy and AJ both 2 year 25million dollar contract extensions. With Barmes leaving, thats about a 75 million dollar payroll.

That leaves 20mill to go into free agency, I guess I'd spend the bulk of that on another Wandy/AJ.

In your scenario, I would probably go after older guys on short term deals at positions that there isn't an obvious young guy; Wandy and AJ would certainly fit that bill.

The only thing is that if everyone is getting extra x million per year, that will probably just lead to salary inflation, and most likely teams won't be better off on the margins we'll just be a new, higher equilibrium.

I can see it being an advantage for teams that signed guys to long term (4+ year deals) recently, a la BJ Upton's deal doesn't look as bad if you know there is another 25 million coming in each year going forward.

Somehow I would think they would have to spend the money upgrading the offense if at all possible.

With young pitching on the way in the form of Cole, Taillon and even Black They could make sure that Wandy and AJ stick around But there would still be some money for a much needed bat

Retaining Wandy and AJ with the way they are pitching, would cost at least the entire $25 million in tv revenues. With the pitchers we have right now, that probably would be the best use of that money as well.

There have been numerous articles, in both the local (Pittsburgh) media AND the national media which have included two primary points:

- Burnett is thinking about retiring at the close of this season.

- If he decides to continue playing, he would prefer to do that in Pittsburgh.

Okay Mags

Does that change the fact that I read an article where AJ hinted at retirement?

Or are you just pissed because I had to correct one of YOUR posts?

See what happened there? I made a post, and there was no error for you to correct... You Felt Compelled to interject ...I remember last year you specifically stating you would never respond to anything I posted except to correct something I posted that was not correct.... Do you remember this Mags?
