Mark Messier has been awarded a $6-million settlement in the Hall of Famer’s long-standing grievance over money he claimed he was owed by the Vancouver Canucks.

George Nicolau, an 87-year-old New York-based arbitrator with a long history of handling high-profile sports arbitration cases, rendered his decision recently after meeting with both sides earlier this year….

Messier signed a five-year, free-agent contract with the Canucks in 1997 for $6 million a season. The dispute between Messier and the team is believed to centre on deferred money the hockey player felt was owed to him.

It has been reported that Messier had a clause in his contract that would compensate him if the value of the Canuck franchise increased over the life of his contract, which expired in 2002.

Galagher was talking about this yesterday .. that the "agreement" on deferred money was supposedly made on a boat with Messier and the canucks execs at the time ... none of the execs remembered it :L says something about who was running the show at the time ... also good use of roofies by messier

I think if we did a blog post titled "Mark Messier punched in the face", it would do 100k local pageviews in an hour.

Completely off topic but Nuck related, Ryan Kesler going Twitter crazy this morning, lol. He's REALLY pissed at some guy at Spirit Airlines...

Wouldn't it be something if Messier donated half of his awarded settlement today to Canuck Place?

Ah, yes, the dark years that saw the Canucks do a quick two-year rebuild in which they drafted both Sedins and turned old parts like Linden and Mogilny into the West Coast Express. That team was a Sean Burke away from legitimately competing; the only "dark" thing about that rebuild was that they bet on Garth Snow.

Seriously, does Vancouver not realize how fortunate it was to turn its 1996-97 roster into its 1999-2000 roster at the sacrifice of two seasons in which they wouldn't have been competitive anyway? The Canucks could've brought in Sakic and Fedorov that Summer instead of Messier to play alongside Linden and the boys, and it still wouldn't have made a lick of difference because Kirk McLean blew more goats in the mid-to-late 90s than Roberto Luongo could ever dream of.

I want to know why Kesler is flying Spirit - you'd think he could afford a normal airline, not a discount carrier

So your saying it's difficult to blow goats in the butterfly (or flat on your stomach)?

some truth in this ... Messiers horrific play for the canucks, not to mention his demand to play pk and pp when he was slower than shit and couldnt check his way out of a paper bag, led to them finishing in next to last place so they could end up drafting sedins ... and then the last words he uttered to a vancouver tv station before he left the team ... "whaddya mean ... we had a great season"

plus he mentored Todd Bertuzzi into becoming a great human being

so theres that

The Canucks should have protected their asses with a "decreased value clause" on Messier.Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they get worse with every year Messier was there.

The "Mark Messier Leadership Award"-let me lead you to the bottom of the standings.

No, they were pretty good in 1999-2000. Almost scored as many goals as Colorado, but they had terrible goaltending. In the end, they went 27-21-11-7 (90 point pace) with Messier as their top per-game producer (54 points in 66 games), but only 3-8-4-1 (57 point pace) with him injured.

You might be thinking of them getting progressively worse under Trevor Linden...

Adjusted to 82 Games
1992: 99 point pace
1993: 99 point pace
1994: 83 point pace
1995: 82 point pace
1996: 79 points
1997: 77 points

so your argument was that Messier's value was that he made the team so very shitty, so very quickly that we got a good draft pick?
that he valiantly led them to the bottom of the standings in record time? aaaalrighty then.

when I see you post about messier, it all gets filtered down to :bj:

Messier turned this team into a shitshow yes Trevor was declining but the way they stripped him of his captaincy was embarrasing for someone like him it was plain wrong on every level there is nothing to be proud about in his years. Yes we got the sedins but we almost lost our team. Messier was 100% at fault for the implosion

Seriously. Maybe Mess can loan him a couple bucks so he can take a trip on a better airline next time...
