Go Army!
Just heard B&S talk about this a few minutes ago. They're speculating he's coming up to start in lieu of Felix but had no specifics on a timetable or even an injury. Just guessing at this point.
Yeah, this is what I am thinking too. That or they send down O'Malley and carry an extra guy in the bullpen, and Paxton could eat a lot of relief innings as a long man. It gets hot in San Diego and Arlington. The starters may run out of gas quickly.May be going with a six man rotation since they don't have an off day in this current stretch from 5/27-6/12
Something else I was thinking was they want to get Montgomery(does Montgomery have options left?) a couple starts in Tacoma to stretch him out to take over for Miley in the rotation
Well that is a relief. Is this his first DL stint? I certainly don't remember one in recent years.
Good news, all things considered. Not his elbow as I feared.

I remember the one for his elbow. A lot of people holding their breath on that one.Larry Stone @StoneLarry 3m3 minutes ago
First time Felix Hernandez has been on DL since June 23-July 11, 2008 (sprained ankle). Only other time: April 19-May 15, 2007 (elbow)
M's prepared for problems with his new contract, too.I remember the one for his elbow. A lot of people holding their breath on that one.
- 13:$19M, 14:$22M, 15:$24M, 16:$25M, 17:$26M, 18:$26M,19:$27M, 20:$1M conditional club option
- club may exercise 2020 option if Hernandez spends more than 130 consecutive days (in one season or from one season overlapping into the next) on disabled list with right elbow surgery or other procedure to repair right elbow injury
I remember reading about that the day he extended. Felix was supposedly the one who initiated the clause. He wanted the club to be able to get some return on their investment in case he had a significant injury. John Lackey also had a similar clause in his contract with Boston although I doubt if he was the one who initiated it. But because he missed a year with a TJ, a final year on his contract (2015) kicked in at the major league minimum.M's prepared for problems with his new contract, too.
That 2020 club option weighs heavily on his mind, guaranteed.

Could be a handful of reasons.
Couple things come to mind right away:
-Since they wouldn't need to call him up until he is needed, points to an injury to either Felix or a bullpen guy like Nuno or Montgomery.
-Something else I was thinking was they want to get Montgomery(does Montgomery have options left?) a couple starts in Tacoma to stretch him out to take over for Miley in the rotation. And they are using Paxton as an opportunity to push back the starters an extra day. But the timing of it all is a little strange for this to be the case.
-Could be as simple as a spot start giving the rotation an extra day
It's a well known fact that baseball players are superstitious. They don't mess with what is working. The Mariners are 7-3 when Miley starts. As long as they keep winning 70% of his starts, he'll stay in the rotation no matter how bad his stats are.Hopefully Felix's velocity issues can be traced to this injury.
I don't think they need to replace Miley in the rotation. Not yet, anyway. His ERA isn't particularly good, obviously, but he hasn't been a total disaster either. His problem has been giving up homeruns. Assuming they eventually do replace him or someone else in the rotation, I don't think Montgomery will be the guy they turn to. They seem to like him where he is and he's been very good in his current role. If they do want to replace someone in the rotation long-term and they need someone to make a spot start while they look for a more long-term replacement, Monty would be the best option for that scenario, but I can't see them moving him into the rotation full-time unless they absolutely had to. I don't necessarily see Paxton in that role either, except that he has the most starting experience at the Major League level and they might want to go with someone like that over someone with less experience, but more potential.

I sincerely hope Jerry Dipoto isn't that stupid...It's a well known fact that baseball players are superstitious. They don't mess with what is working. The Mariners are 7-3 when Miley starts. As long as they keep winning 70% of his starts, he'll stay in the rotation no matter how bad his stats are.
Well only thing I hope is that the injury isn't a lingering one and really it might help Felix down the stretch to not burn out.
Paxton has been hot and cold in AAA I'm not expecting too much but he should be able to keep us in games.
I would take that happily.
