I agree they're better off going with a young QB. if that QB is Pryor or Geno Smith or someone else depends on different factors. The issue is that they get little cap value by cutting him. Instead of a 16 million dollar cap hit for keeping him they'll have a 10 million dollar hit. I think they keep on the roster unless a worthwhile trade offer is made.

I see the logic, but I think it can back-fire. It's hard for a young qb to not look over their shoulder. Especially on a team that is going to suck. Palmer isn't going to want to ride pine - Not after putting up 4K last year. If you keep him, you probably have to start him.

I don't understand why you don't try Pryor at least for a season. At worst, they suck and they get another high pick to build on, at best they find out that Pryor is their future. With Palmer they honestly get nothing by keeping him.

Exactly. Palmers teams are 13 and 34 in his last 47 games QBing

Oak can save millions, and even the worst Qbs, on the worst teams in the NFL can win as often as that.

They could start Palmer. if the team surprises and is competitive they keep playing him. They could play the "give the kid a chance" card when the team struggles early in the season.

Plus if Palmer is cut they probably have to add some type of veteran presence at the QB spot. that's likely a 2-4 million dollar investment that cuts into the 6 you're saving.

Unless they're drafting a QB in the first rd I think it makes sense to hold onto Palmer.

we'll see how it plays out. getting cut is probably his dream scenario. He pockets the guaranteed money left in his deal and then goes wherever he wants.

The other wildcard here is the coaching situation. Dennis Allen has two ways to keep his job. The first is to win more games than expected -- This would be more likely with either a hotshot rookie (not sure that exists this season) or a vet that gets hot (Palmer?). Or he can show potential with a young team led by a young qb (Pryor) and perhaps buy another season if he convinces ownership that he has a the team moving in the right direction.

If Allen goes with Palmer and they win 5 games, both of them will be seeking employment next year.

I think he has to actually be cut before an "i told you so" thread is warranted. I bet he gets traded. the only scenario where I can see him getting cut is if they pick Geno Smith at 3. Pyror is way too raw to go in as an uncontested starter.

I read a couple days ago that the Raiders are looking for a trade. If they can't find one, then they're going to keep him.

According to the source, the Jets and another "mystery" team were vying for his services.

Carson will restructure his contract for the new team, assuming he wants to go there. He really has Oakland in a bind right now.

Jets aren't paying a QB 13 mil when they are paying Sanchez over 10 mil. Oakland can't sign their players if they keep Palmer with this contract. They are HORRIBLY cap strapped.

Actually, as it stands right now, they're $6-7 million below the cap.

Here's my reasoning..

The Niners, who were low on cap space and already had an entrenched starting QB on the roster, were able to get a haul for Smith.

Smith is younger and has played much better than Palmer the past two seasons. But I'm just using him as an example that it's always a sellers market at the QB position..

The Cardinals seem like the most logical fit to me. West Coast team, good WRs, a Coryell offense with a HC who loves the vertical passing game. Unless they're bullish on a QBs in the draft they'd probably like having Palmer as a starter in 2013. They'd give up a pick for him if that's the case. If they wait for Palmer to get cut the Raiders GM could drag it out into the summer. Just hold him as long as possible as trade bait. If they really want him as their starter they'd eventually cave and give something (i have no clue on his trade value)

Palmer to Fitzgerald would work I think.

still, they have to face SF twice and seattle twice, and I don't think they will beat the rams twice, so they will still be way off the playoff radar, but Fitzgerald should become a viable fantasy option again.

Ian Rappaport reported on NFL Network that Carson is "resistant" to a pay cut or restructure.

Looks like he wants a release and probably has his eyes set on Arizona, which is crazy imo considering the division they're in.

I hear you concerning Palmer, but I would be willing to bet serious money that Pryor has absolutely zero future in the NFL.

I think it's crazy given their protection problems. He might get killed.

That said, I bet Palmer would be pretty good in Arians offense -- Assuming they get a running game going and keep him upright.

Name the last QB Arians coached that he was able to keep upright. Definitely not Ben and certainly not Luck.

I agree. Arizona has talent at the skill positions, but that o-line is going to get him killed. Combine that with playing SF, Seattle, and St. Louis 6 times a year, it's like going against the AFCN in the early 2000's all over again.

Good point. Though, I'm not sure anyone could keep Ben from getting hit. His entire game is predicated on the pocket breaking down and making what Marvin likes to call "an off schedule" play.

And after another rd of cuts they're at 15 million under the cap.

Looks like they're keeping Palmer whether they renegotiate or not. They have the cap space.

Palmer's only value to that team is if they can trade him somewhere else. he makes too much money and they're yrs away from fielding a competitive team..

I think Palmer holds them hostage by refusing to take a paycut, and the Gm holds him hostage by keeping him there...
