You mean will all 47 of their fans raise their voice at the same time? :noidea:

I’m sure Condelezza Rice is sick of paying for him though since it appears she is the only Stanford alum who cares about football.

I always root for the win.

Same here. I think more about the kids playing than the coach.
Still think JT Daniels has a shot to get his job back? Slovis keeps this up no way in my opinion Harrell goes with someone else.I think JT was Heltons pick and Harrell was a Slovis guy .

Depends on if there's a coaching change or not.

If Helton and his staff are still here, then I think JT will be given every opportunity to be the starter again and would likely even be penciled in as the starter. That's how it has to be because he didn't lose the job because of poor play, he got hurt.

Also, Slovis has been great no doubt. But he also has gone through some rough spots as well (especially on the road). Maybe, because of his experience, JT doesn't have those and we win a couple of the games we lost.

If there's a coaching change, I think it will be a completely wide open competition.

Since Helton is the guy who chose Max browne over Sam darnold in 2016 I would not put it past him to give JT the job next season. If there was no Slovis I would be fine (not jumping for joy , just fine) with JT. I think he's capable. I just don't see the same desire and his arm is not close to Slovis. I watched videos of the off season workouts and one thing I kept telling my friends is Daniels would look like he's just playing catch with friends on a saturday at the park while the other QBs were doing all the mechanics of what they would do in a game and throw ropes. Daniels looked like a QB whos had three years starting and didn't have to worry about the back up taking his job. Slovis has something like three 400 yard passing games in the last for games. I think Darnold had one and Barkley had a couple. People forget or don't realize Slovis is an 18 year old true freshman and it has showed at times. I jus think his upside is higher than Daniels. I think he wants it more. I think the portal awaits the one who doesn't get the job and I can see Daniels as Tate Martell 2.0

It's an interesting situation with Helton.

On the one hand, the team has, for the most part, underachieved during his tenure and recruiting is down (not as bad as some claim, but still down).

His resume is solid, definitely solid enough to keep his job almost anywhere else. But it also is very inconsistent and for virtually every positive, there is a negative that cancels it out.

He stabilized program after Kiffin and Sark by simply being a grownup.

He has won the PAC-12 South twice and is 1-1 in the PACCCG.

He's won a Rose Bowl, been to the Cotton Bowl and the Holiday Bowl.

He's 3-1 so far against the school across town.

He has recovered fairly well from going 5-7 last season and if Arizona or Colorado upsets Utah, he'll have won the PAC South 3 times. He has a shot at being 9-4 (with a win over UCLA and a bowl win) and even 10-4 with a win over UCLA, in the PACCCG and a bowl win.

The kids all love him and say what you want about results, they always play hard and have never quit on him. Which has resulted in some fairly impressive come from behind wins.

He has an overall record of 38-20.

The negative:

In games against the top teams in the nation, a group USC has traditionally been a part of, USC has been terrible.

He is 1-4 vs. Notre Dame (including a 49-14 blowout).

He is 1-2 in bowl games.

Recruiting is also down. Not as bad as some want to claim, but still down.

There have been concerns about in game adjustments.

Some of the negative isn't entirely on him. Uncertainty re: the school President and AD along with calls for Helton's head from the day he was hired, certainly haven't helped with recruiting. Neither has the admissions scandal or the FBI thing with basketball. The latter 2 have nothing to do with football, but it's still the Athletic Department.

Some of the negative is on him, mainly, being too loyal to assistants who weren't getting the job done.

If Helton is retained, it won't be because of a $20 million buyout. There are no doubt, boosters who will pay that bill. It will be because the new AD and President want to make sure he is given a fair chance and/or because they don't feel they can get someone better at this time.

I think it's all about if they know they can land either Urban or Franklin. If they don't get word from their agent that they are available I think they stay with Helton for another season. Like Darnold did before ,Slovis might have saved him . I don't know what other PAC teams have coming back next season but USC is only starting four seniors and a few Jrs. They are loaded for next season. A good ending here and a good season next and recruiting will take care of itself. If he stays I hope he realizes what his shortcomings are and tries to work on that. In game adjustments are at the top. Another is being loyal to coaches or players. Too many times players have been allowed to f up or under perform with no change. There's no excuse for that at USC because theres talent behind everyone.

100% agree.

I think that if they can get Urban or Franklin, Helton's gone. As much as I like and defend him, because of the turmoil around the school and athletic department, I consider him unproven.

Urban and Franklin are both proven commodities. So, if they can get one of those 2, they kind of have to pull the trigger.

He has shown an ability to make necessary changes, even if a bit late on it by revamping the coaching staff.

Now, he has to show the same with players. It's not as much the play itself that I find concerning. It's the dumb, unnecessary penalties that kill drives on offense and extend them on defense. It's at the point where if there is a flag on any play, I just assume it's against us.

There has to be some kind of consequence for those things, or the players aren't going to learn.

I kind of see Helton as being 1 step away from being the coach we need to get us back to the top.

The problem is, it's a very big step and not all coaches can make it.

No reason for either of those coaches to take the USC job

Why would they take the USC job over similar ones?

For one, what "similar jobs" are available or likely to be?

As for why they would take the USC job...

For Meyer, he was won National Championships at 2 different schools. I don't know if anyone else has done that, but I'm pretty sure no one has won NC's a 3 different schools. USC already has a lot of talent and with the new President and AD in place, things look a lot more stable. Add Meyer to that and recruiting would be back to the levels we are used to quickly. Meaning, Meyer could have them back in the NC hunt quickly.

For Franklin, nevermind that USC is a little bigger name than Penn St. Looking at how he has resurrected that program, he would have an opportunity to do the same at USC, only he'd be starting with a lot more talent than he had when he took over Penn St. He's also said to be a fantastic recruiter, so again, recruiting would be back to normal levels very quickly.

For both, USC doesn't have a lot of juniors or seniors, so they shouldn't be losing much talent.
