I can tell by your sign you think the Chainsaws are going to win 1 conference game. At least do a peace sign so you are hoping for two or the stinger.

Najee Harris left Cali for Alabama as the #1 RB in the country ( and top 3 player) a few years back and hasn't really played. Last night he was still backing up. Next year he will be a junior. PAC coaches have to do a better job of selling their programs and playing time. The announcers said he was getting pretty frustrated with the situation and with losing last night I'm sure it's not any better. Yes he's got one NC as a backup there and no playing time and he's already going to be eligible for the draft after next season. And he was the #1 RB prospect in the country. Shows you the talent stockpile at Bama.

I remember when we used to have a stockpile like that.

Part of the shift was also when they put scholarship limits in place. I think it was in the 70s.

This is definitely part of it. USC used to just stockpile guys. They had things like Marcus Allen playing fullback and blocking for Charles White before becoming the featured tailback.

Scholarship limits prevent some of that. Add in that kids today are often looking to play right away rather than wait their turn and it allows others schools to grab some of those guys that previously would have gone to USC.

Before 2002 USC had 6 straight seasons where they didn't finish better than 3rd in the conf and only one of those was above .500 (8-5) and had 2 bowl games over that span, both losses. Prior to 2002 you had to go back to '88 to find a 10 win USC team.

So... yeah. :L

While USC has the most storied program in the conf with the most overall talent, they've had massive spells of average/sub par as well.

I wouldn't say USC 'was always the pinnacle' of anything. During those downturns others in the conference rose up (see what I did there) and made more headway into the Cali talent pool.

Gotta disagree a little bit here. Talent is never the issue at USC. The issue is whether or not we have the coaching to maximize the talent.

The point was the have been times where other Pac12 schools have been able to poach some of that top tier California talent. Particularly when USC has been a little down. Ducks had a few when they were on sanctions for example. UW got quite a few under Don James when USC was struggling.

The conference being down right now is not going to make a permanent switch to those kids toward the SEC and other national powers. Not more than it already has. All USC, or UW, or any of the others needs to do is get better, have solid recruiters, and give them reasons to stay closer to home.

Welp, pretty sure the rest of you are glad that the Kliff Kingsbury era is finally over at USC.

Now the rest of the conference may have a chance again.

There's not one credible site I've seen that he was really down there. Those rumors meant to rattle recruits always fly around this time of year.

We all know he's not staying forever, but I would expect his next hop really to be HC somewhere and it's not likely to be a major program. Could it come this year? Sure, it's always possible. Just won't get wrapped up in the internet bullshit without something more.

Analysis: Ranking the Pac-12’s Heisman Trophy contenders for 2019
Wilner ranks the way too early Heisman contenders for the conf.

In this space one year ago, the Hotline correctly identified the Pac-12’s top Heisman Trophy contender for the 2018 season — in concept if not in name:

“If 2018 plays out like 2017 and 2016 and 2015,” we opined, “the Pac-12’s top candidate is not currently considered a top candidate.”

At the time, Gardner Minshew wasn’t even on a Pac-12 roster. The most predictable aspect of his emergence on the Heisman scene was its unpredictability.

The 2015 season was supposed to be about Jared Goff as the Pac-12’s top candidate, but it tilted to a first-time starter named Christian McCaffrey.

The 2016 season was supposed to be about McCaffrey but flipped to Jake Browning.

The 2017 season was supposed to be about Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen but turned into the Bryce Love show.

And the 2018 season was supposed to be about Love and Arizona’s Khalil Tate before Mr. Mustache came from the far reaches of nowhere — Washington State via East Carolina via Northwest Mississippi — to finish fifth.

Who is the Pac-12 favorite for 2019?

With apologies to Herbert and Costello … sorry, Abbott and Costello … that’s exactly right: Who is the favorite in 2019.

Here we go …

Also considered: Oregon State running back Jermar Jefferson, Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley, Colorado quarterback Steven Montez, UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Arizona tailback J.J. Taylor and Washington receiver Aaron Fuller.

10. UCLA tailback Joshua Kelley: Averaged 135 yards per game once he became the Bruins’ first option in late September. If Kelley were to add just 10 or 15 ypg to that total and keep the pace for all 12 games, then he’s in 1,800-yard territory.

9. USC quarterback JT Daniels: He’ll have the playmakers and the opportunities, given that USC doesn’t appear to care much about the running game, and USC’s starting quarterback never lacks for hype. So it could be a matter of Daniels executing consistently in a well-conceived, highly-efficient offense. Err …

8. Washington quarterback Jacob Eason: The Georgia transfer has the arm talent to elevate UW’s aerial game, and he’ll have the name recognition with Heisman voters in the southeastern quadrant. The line should be solid, and the receivers are talented. Sleeper candidate No. 1.

7. Arizona State tailback Eno Benjamin: After a 1,600-yard season, Benjamin is actually on Bovada’s early Heisman board (albeit far down the list). We’re impressed by his talent but skeptical of his chances: The departures of N’Keal Harry and Manny Wilkins will likely result in opponents keying on Benjamin and forcing ASU to throw.

6. Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate: Lowered expectations will help. So will a healthy ankle. So will a (presumed) better use of Tate’s skills on the part of Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone. But the Wildcats have to win at a high level for Tate to make a run for New York, and that’s hardly a given.

5. Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello: His statistical trajectory indicates a serious Heisman run is possible (29 TDs, 65 percent completions in his first year as a full-time starter), but most of Stanford’s playmakers are gone, including Bryce Love and JJ Arcega-Whiteside. And the schedule is brutal.

4. Colorado receiver Laviska Shenault: Was on the Heisman radar in ’18 before a toe injury derailed his season. Shenault’s versatility creates the potential for enough touchdowns and highlights to grab the electorate’s attention, but playing 1-on-11 for a full season isn’t easy. He’ll need help.

3. Utah tailback Zack Moss: Our second sleeper. Moss laid the statistical groundwork last season (134 ypg once Utah upped his workload to the proper level); the Utes are committed to the run but have the aerial balance to create lanes for Moss; and they should win enough games — the division and perhaps even the conference — to attract eyeballs. The Moss bandwagon is empty, so hop aboard. The Hotline’s driving.

2. Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert: From the experience to the arm talent to the NFL Draft hype to the offensive line (five returning starters) to the name recognition, Herbert has the key pieces in place — well, most of them. He needs help from an unproven group of receivers and more creativity in the playcalling.

1. Who. We’ve covered the established contenders and the sleepers, but recent history suggests an unknown-unknown, so to speak, has the best chance to reach New York. That player could be a yet-to-arrive graduate transfer, a redshirt freshman or a second-tier contributor in 2018 who makes a giant leap.

I mean it's the dead season and there's not much going on.

It's nothing more than Wilner's take on players to watch going into next season.

All your rambling doesn’t change the fact that USC is what makes the conference recruit better. Even in their down times, USC is what keeps California kids home. They are doing a shitty job right now so the poaching of USC recruits isn’t what it was now. It’s ok to admit even when your Puppies split Miami’s title, USC still had better classes than you did. USC being good makes the Pac 12 “good” at football. UCLA being good makes the Pac 12 “good” at basketball.

I don't give two shits about the 'Pac' being good at anything. UW is my only agenda. The Pac is looked at as being a pile of shit right now and that's fine by me because UW already proved even on the backs of a sort of shitty schedule you can still run through this shit fest of football in the Pac and still make the playoffs. So why on earth should we care about this conference perception?

So if I couldn't care less about that, why then should I care about USC's recruiting, or kids from cali going somewhere outside of the conference if they aren't coming to UW?

Get over the past already. Football is entirely national now and the regional elements that were required to build a champion in the 90's and earlier simply don't apply anymore. The 'fence' around the state stuff doesn't apply anymore either. It helps when you can keep top talent from your backyard, but it's not required to build something big.

You need a brand and killer recruiters that can sell that brand in any living room in the country. That's modern college football.

With 10 new players from California, Huskies are recruiting the Golden State as well as they ever have

Poly Bowl tonight. USC has a few players that could commit during the game with other PAC school in the mix too.

So much for the Bryce Love coming back conversation. Dude fucked up his knee good in a meaningless game and season for him. Good thing he's a bright kid who will go on to be a doctor or something .

Yeah, I don't get what the little goober is on about. USC being down helps all of us have a better chance of picking up high 4 and 5 star kids. I mean it's one less obstacle. Bama and the rest of the country are ALWAYS going to be going after those high value targets as well, whether or not USC is in play. Wazzy seems horribly stuck in the 90's or something? :noidea:

Most of the conferences top talent comes from Cali. The more down everyone else is, the more of those you are in play for. It's not complicated. That more of them also drain out to other conferences? So what? That's less talent you are going up against during your conference schedule. If your team isn't getting them, why wouldn't you want them to go somewhere far far away?
