On the eve of Owen Nolan's retirement, I thought it'd be cool if everyone shared their greatest memories of #11. My favorite moment would be the red line goal scored on Roman Turek during the 2000 playoffs and of course his usual exuberant celebration that followed his goals. Here's another awesome memory I have of Owen, took this picture with him at Sharks Fest in 1997. I really wish he could have finished his career playing in teal but when Lombardi dealt him to the Leafs it was kind of a deal that had to be made. I will never forget how painful it was to see him traded, man that hurt. I think if he would have played a few more years in San Jose, he'd be a lock to have his number hanging from the rafters. Even as it stands, I think he deserves to have his number retired, he is arguably the first iconic San Jose Shark. Owen gave the Sharks an identity, his passion and love for the game was second to none when he was here and I think most of us can agree that he was our last "true" captain.

Owen Nolan and Daryl Sutter were a perfect match of coach and Captain. Ornery, no nonsense, physical were traits to describe how they both believed hockey should be played.

My one memory that sticks out in my mind was when Grant Marshall paid the price for effin around with Buster. Earlier in the game, Marshall boarded Nolan. Pretty blatant if I remember correctly, but Buster was okay. Later in the game, Nolan did this to Marshall.

Suspended 11 games, and rightfully so. But it showed you how Buster didn't take no shit from no one and was fine taking care of himself.

I got the lion's share of a broken stick blade of his in warm ups down in here in LA back when they played at the Forum. I tried to get him to sign it later in the year back in SJ but he blew right by me (no beef, he had a bad game despite it being a Shark victory) in a white corvette, iirc.

First off Nolan hasn't announced his retirement just yet. Myself and many others still have the hope he will dress again for the Sharks. Even though deep down I know the dream will end tomorrow at 2:30pm at the San Jose arena.

My favorite memory of Nolan was his first game as a shark. My Dad was able to buy 2 tickets on the glass so we could enjoy a Saturday afternoon game against the Stars. I remember watching Nolan skating around, hitting, and shooting the puck soo hard in that game, and I knew he was going to be a special player. I could list a lot of great plays Nolan made on the ice, and I do remember a lot of them, but seeing him play his first game as a Shark is my favorite memory.

Thanks for all the GREAT MEMORIES BUSTER!
#11 will always be Owen Nolan.

What I like in the Nolan running Belfour clip besides Nolan doing it and laughing after is that Belfour goes to one knee & pops right up. No bitchy flailing soccar exaggurations like todays players... Do that in todays NHL & the goalie would look like a fish outa water, cry concussion, sit for 2 weeks & the player would get suspended who knows how long... Ahhh times have changed :(

That right there sums it up, i figure he or Nabby will be the first to have their jerseys retired

Today’s event grew from a conversation Nolan had with Sharks GM Doug Wilson about a month ago when they ran into each other at the rink.

“I think it was pretty mutual,” Nolan said. “I mentioned I was going to retire and he said let’s do something. It was certainly a great gesture on his part.”

There had been talk of a one-day contract (no, it never included playing an actual game or practicing), but there were complications and instead Nolan became a Shark based on what Wilson called “a handshake deal.”

“The ultimate thing was to have him retire as a San Jose Shark,” Wilson said. “It was something he wanted and we wanted badly.”

Classy move by Doug Wilson. As a fan, I'm thankful that he did this for Owen.

Yes, it was...

Cmon, what collective bargaining related complications could there have been in signing him for 1 day *officially*? Haven't other teams done that in the past? I thought it was pretty common practice?

Or do the Sharks not have a professional contract (or whatever it's called) spot available to do so?

No big deal but just curious...

In the offseason, when stuff like this usually takes place, there are no complications. The one day contracts used to do these types of things are actually PTO's. A player signs a PTO and then is released the next day. Being the offseason there is no cap hit, salary paid out, or restrictions on when PTO's can be used. During the season PTO's can only be used in emergency situations.

Yeah, almost as bad as teh-4-letter network's story:

Nolan, who compiled 1,793 penalty minutes, is perhaps best known for his called shot in the 1997 All-Star Game. He was in alone on goalie Roman Turek and pointed to the top-right corner of the net before hitting the spot to complete a hat trick.

Ahh, OK, thanks...

Now that you mention it, it does seem like that stuff only takes place during the offseason.

It makes sense.
