I actually enjoy the 3 on 3, which is new for a traditionalist like myself. Loved the 5 on 5, was not a fan of the 4 on 4 and still hate the SOs 10 years later.
But the 3 on 3 does it for me, very creative and there is end to end action. So far so good, it has produced wins in most of the games. The 4 on 4 just turned it into roller hockey on ice, and there are strategies there too to prevent teams from winning/defending their nets tight and they were employed by NHL coaches leading to the SOs more.
Of course its gimmicky that's what all of these ideas are about. Unfortunately they aren't going back so unless your going to turn off the TV or leave the arena after regulation your kinda screwed and should hope they find something that isn't as horrible as a SO
