I think a lot of it stems from it 'not being American.' I know that feeling gets thrown around a lot, but I honestly think that it's true. When you think of baseball, football and basketball, you think American sports, which is pretty funny because none of those three were created in America. But the sports as they exist today were 'fine tuned' if you will in the US and developed more or less into the games that exist now. Soccer existed in some form long before the US was even a country. It was not created here and there was no substantial change to soccer that occurred in the United States so the American people on the whole really don't seem to care about it. It's not 'their' sport. And while it does appear to slowly be gaining some support, because it's not an American sport, people are more likely to pass it off as boring or uninteresting without even giving it a chance. JMO

rep point ... i agree with that

and because its a "foreign" sport its so easy for americans to mock or make fun of it and any importance that it has in countries around the world

I watched the US game today and the German game earlier. On other days I'll see what games are on and watch a bit.
After the World Cup is over I wont watch soccer or even think about it for 4 years. I respect the game and the World Cup, but I just dont like it very much.
I think I am pretty open minded and feel the reason I dont like it it is not because its foreign or un-American. I just dont care for it. I dont like basketball either.

I watched about 2 minutes of the basketball finals last night, figuring game 7 for the championship, what the hell.
then I realized that I could give a shit if the roof caved in, let alone who wins the fuckin' game. :D

so then I watched Jeopardy.

The same can be said of Golf but it is still popular with the best players in the world being American. My take is the US as a whole is a fairweater fanbase. If the US wins the world cup Soccer will be huge in the US. Atleast till they suck again

I forgot all about game 7 and wondered who won about 15 minutes ago. Pretty exciting finals huh?

I dont know what time it started but I was at a bar until about 9pm and it wasnt on any of the TVs there.
Oddly enough, for this area, its kind of a soccer bar all the time. They have some kind of satellite package with a lot of the European league games.

Yesterday's basketball game was the only basketball game I've watched this year. Like soccer, it's another game I don't connect with.

Hahaha, I did the same. Except the Jeopard part.

But I am fair weather. I follow the Kings locally (more often when they are good) but if they aren't on I could care less.

OK, so here I am. An American. Canadians and Europeans keep telling me soccer is the world's best game, so I cave and watch my first soccer game in at least 4 years today. Probably because I'm rooting for the United States, I actually began to find myself getting worked up as we slowly began to come back from our 0-2 hole. USA ties it up! Incredible! WE TAKE THE LEAD!! And then...the referees completely fuck over my team.

Holy fuck, Batman. That was certainly not the way to get Americans hooked on soccer. I briefly felt like I got galarraga'ed again.

To be fair, you can't judge an entire sport on one game. I think of soccer like hockey light. It's not as great as hockey - diving/writhing on ground instead of hitting, not as much flow, and not as much action (shots, scoring, hitting, etc.). But the two sports are very similar in most ways.

So many corners. It sure would be nice to have a nice tall player to convert these.

Get the big tall lanky freak off the bench in.

Actually, if Slovenia beat England and the US draw, the US will advance in the #2 spot.
