Just got back from a couple of days up in Whistler - Nice weather (played some tennis, did some mountain biking and hiking), did the Sea-to-Sky gondola in Squamish, good times.

Never been to Whistler but did do a Pemberton run when a friend lived up there. I was in a VW Westphalia so the highway was wasted on me.

going sorta cool story bro but this book (East Side Story) is immense so far ... might only resonate big with me because its basically my childhood living and growing up next to the PNE. Ive read just the first 25 pages (chapter 1) and it already mentions 2 people I remembered growing up in the area.

I reached out to the author and confirmed "Gary" mentioned in the excerpt below was indeed the Gary that lived/rented the City of Vancouver parks board clubhouse at Hastings baseball field on East Pender and Lillooet. He was also the assistant coach of the little league baseball team I played for ... when criminal records checks didnt exist for kids sports lol... in one game I played he stabbed the other assistant coach in the side of the eye with a pen. I was playing CF and I vividly remember the LF'er Ryan (the son of the coach who got stabbed) running to the dugout in tears after saying to me "Im gonna kill that motherfucker."

Since the Cameron Lake fire I had left town but once all summer, June 14 for a wedding.

Today I made the haj to Parksville to Fireside Used Bookstore. basically 3 months later.

Boy do idiots ever drive slowly through Cathedral Grove. Followed a long line of cars on the way home that never moved on from the 30 kph limit in the fire zone by Angel's Rock. Only sped up to 80 once we got out of the Grove.

A guy I know lost his wife Sept 2. I suppose they took the first trip out of town when the highway opened to 2-way traffic. On their motorcycle.

Leaving Qualicum, heading home. a guy in a car turned left right in front of him. Wife killed instantly. So sad.

You couldn't pay me to ride a motorbike.

Sort of as a side note -- my cousin grew up right next to the PNE as well. I believe they were on Triumph street (I know it was really close if it wasn't). He actually went on to become a DJ at C-FOX, back in the eighties. Not sure if you've read it but you might be interested in the book - The Last Gang In Town. Basically, it's the antics of the Clark Park gang, in the seventies.

Havent read it it but know of the book. Clark Park gang was before my time but definitely their aura stayed in the community when I was growing up.

Teens at the start of the 80's still tried doing that local park gang thing. I remember there was a Clinton Park "gang" and an Adanac park "gang" ... mostly just hanging out drinking and burning out tires and the occasional fight. Still casual violence but not like Clark park gang who would instigate fights with police lol
