I kind of have a problem with professionals having a union in the first place.

They should have to stand on their own merits like I do.

Then again, those that can do, those that can't teach.....

My dad was a teacher. A damn good one.

I hate that expression and assume that people that use it are fucking morons.

I will say the government has done a great job over the years of undermining the union in terms of reducing their bargaining power ... there are MANY unemployed teachers in BC yet the government has continued to allow the post secondary institutions (UBC and SFU) to churn out 250 PDP (from each univers.) graduates per year

different story for nurses ... short supply ... they will have government over a barrel with that negotiation

Good for your dad.

Assume all you wish.

I'll assume your dad was an older fella.

Not one of the losers that do the job now.

There is a short supply of registered nurses, that is true. However, we have a glut of LPN (legal practical nurses) in BC and the gov't is trying to get LPN's to perform many of the tasks of registered nurses. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have someone with a four year university degree looking after me than someone churned out from Sprott-Shaw.

Yeah, Crusty Clark just loves to wag that $3000 dollars for massages at everyone, doesn't she; what better way to try and turn public opinion at the teachers. Really though, that massage thing is really a non-issue and I somehow doubt it's any kind of sticking point in this strike. If the teachers can get the class room size issue resolved - something they've already legally won in court - everything else should be a piece of piss. I agree though, they shouldn't get any more money than any other union.

although class size/composition is the hill that Jugs Clark would die on ... Id like to see if the teachers would settle for that if it meant their wage/benefits package demands went bye-bye ... prob wouldnt be a sticking point in totality huh?

have you seen what the teachers want???

$3000 for massages per year???

IVF / Fertility treatments covered??? what do those run ... $10,000 to $15,000 minimum?

- 2 year maternity leave
- 6 week bereavement leave... doesn't have to be relative. "Oh, Joan Rivers died, I'm so upset I need 6 weeks to chill."
- 100% dental
- 16% raise over 4 years (versus inflation of what... 1.5% per year?)

Did I hear correctly that the BC Nurses Union gave $500,000 to the teachers union?

Nurses union is up to bat next.
it in their very best interest to see the bar set as high as possible.

Coming from someone who's gone through it 8 times (I maybe had an easier time than my wife did... maybe. If she reads this I will deny everything.), I can tell you it depends on the cycle.

Ours were pretty much bang on $10,000, half of which were the drugs.

Of course, there are provinces which will actually cover 3 IVF cycles for EVERYONE. Not sure what they cover (drugs or medical costs or both). BC is of course not one of them.

What does everybody have against Clark?

I mean, didn't she just get the duties/tariffs removed so BC and Alberta can freely enjoy each other's wine and spirits like pickled vodka?

/is this BC teacher's union a northern offshoot of the California teachers union? WTF

I just wish there was more urgency to try to get a deal in place - The BC Legislature isn't set to return until October 6th and then Christy Clark is planning to go to India for 10 days starting October 9th. Christy could call the legislature back early if she wanted to, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

About the best case scenario is they're legislated back to work in about a month. Crusty Clark is completely bent if she's expecting people to be ok with waiting until mid October until school is back in session.

Clitty Cluck and 'Little Stevie' SHarper both hav'ta hit the road soon - preferably from a great height. The Re-form 'experiment' is ova, a very dark page in Canarduckian history, that cannot pass too soon.

Can'tucks look odds-on to miss the post season again - let's not forget how used to that the new goalie is

Frankly I'm more interested in the current kerfuffle over ferry fares. A study was done saying over $2 billion in revenue has been lost due to people NOT taking ferries because they cost to much.

My kids are long out of school so the strike has zero impact on me. Aside from having to listen to the 2 teachers living across my creek entertaining and BBQing all the time cause they aren't working.....
