Very true, but that stat is particularly relevant to the Masters, the Open Championship, and the PGA - tournaments where the winner is usually somewhere in the -8 to -15 range depending on the course/conditions.

The US Open often has a winner at -2 or -1. And if the course keeps drying out and the pin/basket placements become harder over the weekend, that is certainly a possible winner's score for this tournament. So Tiger is still in the hunt if he is starting the weekend only 4 or 5 strokes off the leader, rather than at a +2 or +3 which is 10 strokes off the leader.

Phil is playing way too much army golf today...Hasn't hurt him too much so far though.

left, left, left right left...

Aaaah. Lol. Headline on PGA.com...

Phil Mickelson is on the course attempting to tame Merion

Sounds kinky, Phil.

"Well, I could think of three things I'd like to do. One would involve some ice cubes and a nine iron. Two would include a buffalo, live or stuffed, preferably stuffed for safety's sake, and three, we bring back some of those ice cubes and switch it over to a pitching wedge."

I think Rickie Fowler could get some landscaping endorsements after watching that shot...

The greens are just kiling these guys. These guys are missing putts from 10-15' like many of us do. Even have see some misses from 3 feet or less.

I think Horschel will be the lone guy under par at the end of today the way it's going.

Tiger's +3 is looking pretty good right now. He's been off the course for hours and has moved up 7 spots.

Story of the day is Cheng-Tsung Pan - the Taiwanese amateur who plays college golf for the Washington Huskies. Had some GREAT shots and is -2 for his second round.

If I had to pick a guy likely to win I think Justin Rose and Nicolas Colsaerts are playing some great golf, though they need to make some putts.

Look out for Ian Poulter.

No one gets hotter with the flat stick than this guy. He's also a bulldog it tight spots as evidenced by his Ryder Cup heroics.

WOW! Mickelson just hit an eagle from about 100 yards out to vault from 1 back of 3 guys to 1 in front of 3 guys. Possible shot of the tournament. Incredible.

I'm pulling for Hunter, but Mickelson, Day, Mahan, or Rose would all be worthy champs. That's a pretty good group with all 4 in the top 30 in the world.

I loved how Horschel was just moving his arms trying to will in Jason Day's putt.

The honor and sportsmanship involved in golf are one of the things that make it so special.

Can't remember a tourney where so many putts were SO close but not dropping. This course is brutal.

That could be a very costly bogie for Phil...
