Very true, but that stat is particularly relevant to the Masters, the Open Championship, and the PGA - tournaments where the winner is usually somewhere in the -8 to -15 range depending on the course/conditions.
The US Open often has a winner at -2 or -1. And if the course keeps drying out and the pin/basket placements become harder over the weekend, that is certainly a possible winner's score for this tournament. So Tiger is still in the hunt if he is starting the weekend only 4 or 5 strokes off the leader, rather than at a +2 or +3 which is 10 strokes off the leader.
