My hope is that the depth of the story and the following it is sure to get will attract some big names to subsequent seasons.

I'm hoping the story may drag on and WH and MM are brought back next season. But I doubt it.

No man ... No chance ... And im ok with it

I just dont know how they could ever top it

One of the biggest issues that plagued Twin Peaks, Lost, and The X-Files was that they ran for multiple seasons. They all set up their mythologies and mysteries to pay off big, and the longer they ran the larger that payoff was expected to be. Twin Peaks fumbled in its second season after solving the initial mystery. Lost gave viewers too many red herrings, then incited their wrath with a disappointingly magical ending. By the time The X-Files fully explained its unbelievably complicated mythology, the audience was no longer as rapt as they’d once been. Maybe just answering the questions at all is bound to be disappointing. When the answers do come, the pleasure of wondering what they will be comes to a halt. And all those hours spent keeping track of fictional numbers, events, and characters start to feel like a fever dream.

What True Detective has on its side that those other shows didn’t is its format. It’s an anthology show, akin to a miniseries. We have no idea whether the next season will also be about unspeakable cosmic horror and swamp murders. Five episodes in, True Detective’s big questions still remain open. But three episodes from now, we’ll know everything there is to know. We want answers more than anything, but we also never want this season to end. Even if True Detective does drive us all crazy with its second act, I’d rewatch it in a heartbeat. I keep getting older, and time is a flat circle. See y’all in Carcosa!

Good episode. They are finally tying the two timelines together. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more 'present-day' (I put it in quotes because as you all know by now, time is not linear, it's a flat circle) action. I think we're done with the interview stuff, or at least with MM's.

I just started watching it last week ... and I'm hooked. Now I gotta go back and see all the episodes I missed. Wow ... how did HBO snag Matt Mc & Woody to do this series??? Great pairing!

She easily could be the next victim, especially if she continues this route she's going down.

Wasnt there also a naked doll group thing going on when he called the kids to dinner a few episodes ago? At the time I thought it all was just showing how there were dark things - troubled outside of his work life but now I wonder.

So do you guys think it's possible that Hart or Cole are the killer (or a killer)?

Got any theories on where this is going?

I keep thinking of Hart's line about the answer usually being right in front of us.

I don't think either of them are the killer. Think that would be too obvious, IMO.

I can't wait for Sunday's episode.

My theory:

I think Cohle is "a" killer but not "the" killer ... Cohle IS the true detective! That storage locker probably contains a bunch of evidence he has collected as hes continued to investigate these cases as a bartender

I think Cohle killed billy lee tuttle after finding out he was the yellow king

Hart i believe in current day knows everything about carcosa and the killings and got to his current position/stature because he too was a "company man" and looked the other way from what these "important men" were doing. I had thoughts he could be the killer after seeing what is going on with his daughter but he acts out too emotionally so i cant see him being a cold or calculating killer

/Just sayin

That's an excellent point.

Neither are the killer, but there could be something more going on between Cohle and the killer. Maybe a shared history. They are starting to imply that some high up government officials might know something - we'll see what they develop there.

Also, reading some online comments, here are apparently a lot of references (black stars, yellow king) to a supernatural piece of literature. Maybe they shake it up and add a bit of the supernatural? Would seem to go against the 'true detective' theme but you never know.

I dont think one of them is the killer. Just a hunch though. I would not be surprised to find out that they have had some contact in the previous 10 years. I think they fight they have next week is real, but that they might both be looking for a/the killer and perhaps they are lying to the police in the present as well.
