Not when the sport of tennis needs, more allegations of match fixing.
Suspicious betting patterns for Sunday’s first-round match of the Winston-Salem Open between Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov and Thiago Monteiro of Brazil caused the Tennis Integrity Unit to investigate.
Dolgopolov, ranked No. 63 in the world with a career high of No. 13 in 2012, lost 6-3, 6-3 to Monteiro, the No. 114-ranked player in the ATP.
According to TIU, it was informed of the match because Dolgopolov’s betting odds changed rapidly before the match started. Some bookmakers suspended all betting because of the suspicious activity.
“The Tennis Integrity Unit was made aware of concerns over betting patterns during the match between Alexandr Dolgopolov and Thiago Monteiro at the ATP World Tour event in Winston-Salem, USA, yesterday (Sunday, Aug. 20),” a statement from TIU said.
Both Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime won their US Open qualifying matches this morning. Two more wins for both and they punch their ticket to the main draw.
The bottom half of the draw is pretty wide open. Could easily see a first-time slam finalist - can Dennis keep his miracle run going?
I think the most impressive thing is his consistency and versatility - he's not beating guys on a single weapon, or with tiebreaks - he's consistently outplaying opponents in the top 50.
