Even if they did make the playoffs, they would be a 1st or at best 2nd round exit. Then the NHL Draft would roll around and we'd all be jealous of the teams picking 1 and 2.
BUT, if they would just go into full-blown 76ers tank mode now, they could likely land McDavid or Eichel. And in 2 years they would be Cup favorites. Imagine a core of:
Connor McDavid
Tyler Seguin
Jamie Benn
Jason Spezza
Val Nichushkin
Brett Ritchie
Cody Eakin
Antoine Roussel
John Klingberg
Julius Honka
Patrick Nemeth
Anyone else in the system now (Hemsky, Garbutt, Horcoff, Cole, Sceviour, McKenzie, Daley, Goligoski, Oleksiak, Jokipakka, Lehtonen, Faksa, Glennie, Campbell... vets and rookies alike... any of these trade chips varying in quality could be used to land draft picks and cap space. Then use those assets to sign or trade for 1 more scoring forward, 2 veteran defensemen, and a great goalie.
That core above plus the 4 additions I listed could easily win a Cup in 2016-2017.
