Man, so heart wrenching...

SYDNEY - In an almost incomprehensible twist of fate, an Australian woman who lost her brother in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 learned on Friday that her stepdaughter was on the plane shot down over Ukraine.

Kaylene Mann's brother Rod Burrows and sister-in-law Mary Burrows were on board Flight 370 when it vanished in March. On Friday, Mann found out that her stepdaughter, Maree Rizk, was killed along with 297 others on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which U.S. intelligence authorities believe was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

"It's just brought everyone, everything back," said Greg Burrows, Mann's brother. "It's just ... ripped our guts again."

Holy hell the luck.

But...and I mean this gently...would you let your step-daughter fly Malaysian after you lost relatives on 370? I mean, KLM flies the same route...

I know this is not really anything to focus on at this stage, but I heard yesterday that Malaysian Airlines is in deep financial trouble. These two recent tragedies could scuttle the airline all together.

Yeah, multitudes of these incidents happening in a relatively short timespan (in this case, though, a VERY short timespan) has killed airlines before, Pan Am and TWA chief among them.

Thing with Malaysian is, I believe, they are state-owned. At this point, at least a rebranding is probably in order.

watching and reading the news. gugh.... this is what the importance is. not that there were 100 activists/researchers for disease, not that this brother was studying to be a doctor, not that there were 23 americans on board. there were brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers and friends that were lost, no matter the nationality or the importance of their position. Who are we to say losing 100 activists is whats truly heartbreaking over losing someone on that plane that was maybe a waitress. It matters not. This is just another example of the world eating itself alive. We are crumbling as a society all over this planet and we hide behind religion, politics, race and finance. This world is sick, very very sick and it needs a cure. Obama just said this would be a wake up call? for what? to send more troops or money into a conflict that shouldnt even exist that the west shouldnt even be a part of? There are days I just want to bury myself into a pillow.

Spot on, Matty.

One thing I do want to say though...

Haven't we as a race always been this way? I mean, just read through the Old Testament of the Bible! Persecution, r*pe, murder, mass genocide. As a race on this earth, we have been doing this type of stuff to each other for thousands of years.

Having said that, in today's society, we are fortunately/unfortunately faced with the reality of immediate reaction to anything that occurs on this earth. And with that maybe comes a new responsibility to react and enact change.

Is that the flight plan *for* yesterday? That is exactly where this plane went. I understood the regular flight pattern to go further south than that link and go over Romania and across the Black and Caspian seas.

I think the diverting further south into Syria and Iraq with ISIS activity would be a greater concern. They aren't over Iran long, and mostly low population mountainous region. Going through Syria and Iraq sends them pretty much right through the center of Iran.

I guess technically the US and Britain are "done" in Afghanistan...

What other one's do you read, 43? I definitely read BBC just because it is so easy being in English.

BBC, and a few London papers although they can be kind of disgusting. I like TheLocal, especially now that they are not just Sweden but all of Norther Europe and Der Spiegel. Plus, I occasionally get links to Malaysian papers translated to English because my cousin lives there.

Holy hell the luck.

But...and I mean this gently...would you let your step-daughter fly Malaysian after you lost relatives on 370? I mean, KLM flies the same route...

Honestly, who would have ever believed it was possible for another incident to strike the same airline so shortly after the first?

Heck, old testament was worse. Then there was new testament time, aka Roman time...you know, where they made prisoners fight lions. I agree, it's the as it happens news that makes things seem worse. There's never been a time of peace in the world...never will be. People suck.

And you can't fault someone for using Malaysian Airlines again. This stuff that's happened to them isn't incompetence it's insanely terrible luck. 777 are regarded as some of the safest commercial planes out there, it's not a case like what happened with the Russian airline carrying Lokomotiv. That's incompetence. However, the PR nightmare will be incredible.

My cousin uses them and Korean air almost exclusively (Until they get to New York on San Fran that is - then she switches to "American Cattle car planes") and the service and accommodations are apparently second to none.

She flies all over Europe, Asia and Australia for work.

I'll preface by saying that this is gonna make me sound like a total weirdo (OK, moreso than I already do).

I read a book a while back called "The Book of Execution". It's a true account of virtually every known method of torture and execution in the history of mankind. Or, at least those that can be verified as actually having been used rather than just made up or anecdotal evidence.

There is some messed up shit in there. Fascinating yet sickening at the same time.

I hate to damper all the pessimism here, but the world is not going to hell, people don't suck and things are not universally awful. Just look at all the recent things that have taken place lately - the WC was fantastic, the Olympics went off just fine, everyday life for most people goes along just fine - I could go on and on but there isn't enough space. I know it's hard not to think the world is going to hell by what the media reports, but honestly if things were as bad as some have expressed here we would all be dead by now. Bad things are always going to happen, but for every bad event there are thousands of good things that happen every day. In the big picture we are far better off today than we were even a hundred years ago, not to mention a thousand or more years ago.

Rant over.

Agreed. It just seems so much worse because of the way the world is connected and with 24/7 shrieking heads on news channels that are marketing arms for their parent companies trying to drive us to fear consume.

The world is not such a bad place. We just need to wait out the rest of the hate filled dying breed.

And, by the way - it's the media the annoys me the most. All the complaints about it being liberal or conservative miss the point. The media's big problem, for me at least, is that it doesn't put anything in perspective anymore. It's all about fear mongering and creating controversy. All tv "news" media for me is useless.

See and I said I was done ranting but I lied. Sorry.

True

I guess I forgot to include the fall of man, that one big flood, multiple plagues, the destruction of Sodom, etc...

Glad we are capable of intelligent discussion on this topic on our board. That's why I love this place ::grouphug:

wouldnt it have been something if Faux News, CNN, CNBC et al. were around in the Middle Ages to cover news ... like ... for example ... the Crusades
