It's simply comes down to following the golden rule. The person next to you wants to lay their head down on their pillow at night unscathed just as much as you do (unless they are chasing 30 virgins in the afterlife).

Now the mindset is too much of "I don't care as long as it isn't me."

Did you see the new "thing" this weekend on twitter? Called it the twitter purge...where people (in other words, men) can post whatever they want about a tweep...pictures, direct messages, secrets...and "they can't get mad". Um, no. That's bull. You know what happened? Dirty nasty pictures are all over the internet now. YOUTHS. STUPID YOUTHS.

While talking of a cease fire, Ukranian soldiers have begun a siege attempting to re-take the nearby city of Donetsk. Which is the closest place with the facilities required to perform the forensic review of the evidence and/or an airport large enough to get the wreckage onto cargo planes and out of the region, not to mention the (so far) 250 recovered bodies and their personal belongings.

I say again:

They placed all the bodies on a rail car and sent it...somewhere. No one actually knows where. But they're giving the black box to Malaysian officials.

I hate to damper all the pessimism here, but the world is not going to hell, people don't suck and things are not universally awful. Just look at all the recent things that have taken place lately - the WC was fantastic, the Olympics went off just fine, everyday life for most people goes along just fine - I could go on and on but there isn't enough space. I know it's hard not to think the world is going to hell by what the media reports, but honestly if things were as bad as some have expressed here we would all be dead by now. Bad things are always going to happen, but for every bad event there are thousands of good things that happen every day. In the big picture we are far better off today than we were even a hundred years ago, not to mention a thousand or more years ago.

Rant over.

Agree and good perspective. There have always been some wicked, sick, and mistreated people out there who cause mayhem, but the difference today is that we absorb all that evil in our media and are inundated with it constantly. On a daily basis, I see dozens of niceties and my community is actually getting better and safer. Keep in mind those positives. Human nature doesn't really change that much and the world we live in today is much safer and more equal for billions of people when compared to centuries past.

Yep, it's all about perspective. Too bad my neighborhood (Florida) isn't like that. Well, unless you are in a gated community.

You know, people have differing beliefs. But I think one belief everyone holds is when they wake up in the morning, they'd like to be able to lay their head back down on their pillow at night having not gotten blown up, shot, set on fire or kidnapped and massacred because they were in the wrong place when some fucking idiot decided to act up.

Maybe someday, we - all the people of the world - will stand up and say 'enough is enough'.

Unfortunately, not everyone holds this belief. Call them psychopaths, extremists, whatever, the label doesnt matter. There is no universal truth when it comes to beliefs (and I dont mean religion) or values. As hard as it may be to accept, there are a minority of people who just dont give a shit. About anything. Not even themselves. This is not a new phenomenon, and has nothing to do with the Internet. It is part of human society. And as long as those people have the means to harm others, they will.

Hopefully the train isn't going to the main train depot in Doentsk. That's apparently the site of a massive firefight at the moment.

My question is - how much longer is 90% of the population going to tolerate the 10% that doesn't want to be functioning members of the world anyway? I'm not asking everyone to think exactly the same. I am hoping that the overwhelming majority of earthlings who don't find it acceptable to take a grenade while getting coffee all stand together on this one issue. We don't have to agree on all the rest... But this one. It would be so nice.

As depressing as the world is and as the world seems to be; I don't think its getting any worse than it has been. I think most things are better now than they were 100 years ago. Its just a smaller world now. Any conflict has so many eyes on it which can be a good thing, but it can be overwhelming too. A blonde girl* is missing across the country or in another country and its headlines for weeks. I think, I hope, we what we see constantly media wise makes the world seem far more dangerous and awful than it really is.

*America and its media loves lost/missing blonde girls. Sorry brunettes. And really sorry minority girls.

Yup. And because it's a smaller world more of the world's citizens see that the special challenges they face are not all that different than anyone else's. We're closer to peace than we've ever been. Because no act of violence is ignored.*

*'cept against minority girls.

:10:

An interesting report that came out recently showed that there has been something like a 17 year long decline in violent crime in this country - and that included the years when this recession was at it's worst. Having a drop in crime in conjunction with a serious financial collapse is almost unheard of. And is definitely unreported cos why would the media want to make a story out of that when they can feed us more fear?

All *American* media.

Good book on the topic written in 1997. Back when 98% of all media was in the hands of 12 corporations. The easy times of yore.

But the good thing about the Internet is you don't have to accept what they want you to. American cable companies and ISP want to stop you from getting your news elsewhere (net neutrality fight), but you can still get outside voices.

I am impressed that Al-Jazeera America is still on Direct TV. I doubt it's on any cable operator. It's coverage of the Ukraine situation has been pretty good. It's a bit biased on the Gaza fighting, as you would imagine.

Comcast carries them in my area. I haven't watched it as I suspect it has it's own biased view.

Give it a try, it's pretty good.

Well, compared to Fox, CNN and MSNBC

Found this on the Pearl Jam website and thought it fit in perfectly with the discussion going on in this thread:

Imagine That -- I’m Still Anti-War.
July 16 2014

Most of us have heard John Lennon sing

“You may say I’m a dreamer,… but I’m not the only one.”

And some of us, after another morning dose of news coverage full of
death and destruction, feel the need to reach out to others to see if
we are not alone in our outrage. With about a dozen assorted
ongoing conflicts in the news everyday, and with the stories
becoming more horrific, the level of sadness becomes unbearable.
And what becomes of our planet when that sadness becomes apathy?
Because we feel helpless. And we turn our heads and turn the page.

Currently, I’m full of hope. That hope springs from the multitudes of
people that our band has been fortunate enough to play for night
after night here in Europe. To see flags of so many different nations,
and to have these huge crowds gathered peacefully and joyfully is
the exact inspiration behind the words I felt the need to emphatically relay.
When attempting to make a plea for more peace in the world at a rock concert,
we are reflecting the feelings of all those we have come in contact with
so we may all have a better understanding of each other.

That’s not something I’m going to stop anytime soon. Call me naïve.
I’d rather be naïve, heartfelt and hopeful than resigned to say
nothing for fear of misinterpretation and retribution.

The majority of humans on this planet are more consumed by the
pursuit of love, health, family, food and shelter than any kind of war.

War hurts. It hurts no matter which sides the bombs are falling on.

With all the global achievements in modern technology,
enhanced communication and information devices, cracking the
human genome, land rovers on Mars etc., do we really have to
resign ourselves to the devastating reality that conflict will be
resolved with bombs, murder and acts of barbarism?

We are such a remarkable species. Capable of creating beauty.
Capable of awe-inspiring advancements. We must be capable of
resolving conflicts without bloodshed.

I don’t know how to reconcile the peaceful rainbow of flags we see
each night at our concerts with the daily news of a dozen global
conflicts and their horrific consequences. I don’t know how to
process the feeling of guilt and complicity when I hear about the
deaths of a civilian family from a U.S. drone strike. But I know that
we can’t let the sadness turn into apathy. And I do know we are
better off when we reach out to each other.

“I hope someday you’ll join us,…”

Won’t you listen to what the man said.

Like every American outlet then. America is home to the majority of the world's Jewish population, and it shows. Really get only one side of the story, when the reality of the history is pretty...well, crappy for Palestines.
