MLB First-Year Player Draft is today. Pirates are said to be going with Gerrit Cole with the number one pick overall, which means Rendon will fall to the Mariners.

Cole's a hard-thrower, consistently touches triple digits, and can keep his velocity late in games in the mid to upper 90s, and he has a plus change and plus slider, so he's definitely got top-of-the-rotation stuff. Additionally, he could be up as early as 2013, which is a nice perk. However, Rendon would still be my first choice. I don't think Cole's the wrong choice, I just think Rendon is a "more right" choice.

Rendon's been slowed this season by shoulder and ankle injuries, as well as playing in a very weak lineup, which means he isn't seeing anything to hit. His OBP is somewhere around .600 because he's already drawn 79 walks! The Pirates are apparently passing on him because of health concerns and because Cole has none, but in a big arm-heavy draft, I think they really need to take advantage of the number one pick and get the best bat out there. Rendon is said to have the best plate vision of any player since Ted Williams. That's why I wanted him to be a Pirate.

Hultzen or Bundy will likely go third, and there's a good high school SS out there as well, but I don't remember his name. He should round out the top five.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, they don't pick again until pick 62 because of all the sandwich round picks. Hopefully a good bat falls to them at that pick, because I suspect a lot of the best bats will be gone in the first and sandwich rounds.
