I said something similar. Apparently they took it because he could use it as a weapon. I still call bull. It's a souvenir. He caught a bat, not many people get that chance. Let him keep it.

THAT was the excuse given?? Things have changed!

Balls you can keep, but players tend to want their bats back. Normally they give the fan who caught the bat an autographed bat.

Doumit didn't want the bat back. The security guy didn't return the bat to the field, he took it up to his work area.

That's lame. They used to give away bats at games. I know because my home security system is a 1983 Orioles World Champions bat that resides under my bed. I got it free as a kid for going to the game. Somebody had to ruin it for everyone.

They ought to take bats away from batters because they keep endangering fans when they throw the bats into the stands.

That's a great security system.

EDIT: Mine is an Andy Van Slyke bat.

Hahaha, or put up netting to protect fans from foul balls... (I know the one behind home plate is kind of necessary, since those get back there super fast and super often.)

If I were him, I would have volunteered to be escorted out. Would have been worth it to keep the bat.

Oh, ditto. He was a Reds fan and the Reds lost the game, so it definitely would have been a worthwhile tradeoff. Perhaps he negotiated to pick up the bat from the security guy on the way out?

I hate the net at hockey games. So many free pucks nobody is getting all because of one freak accident. I mean, I feel bad for that little girl, but it's a shame. I'd bet more people have died from choking on food at games than from pucks, but they still sell food.

I feel bad for her, too, but it's her dad's fault for not catching the puck. Folks just need to be aware when they're at sporting events.

It's easy to forget to watch for foul balls when every fucking pitch there's a silly mascot dancing on dugouts, or 5-second clips of popular music at full blast.

I want to watch my baseball game in peace.

This all reminds me of a conversation I had at Camden Yards years ago with security. Around the 5th inning I realized I had left my keys in my car and that is was possibly still on and I had driven like 4 others. So, I left to go to try to check to make sure that's where they were so I could get the call in to AAA so I could watch the rest of the game and we wouldn't be there all night. This is in 2002.

I go to leave the stadium and they tell me I can't come back in. I ask why, they say that's their policy. I go to the main office and explain my situation to the main security people and this conversation ensues...

Me: I just need to go out to try to get my keys so me and my friends aren't here until 1am.
Security Rep: We can't allow anyone to come back into the stadium once they leave.
Me: It never used to be a problem. Why?
Security Rep: Well, we've had to institute new rules since September 11th.
Me: What does September 11th have to do with it? You can search me when I come back in.
Security Rep.: It's for security. Because of September 11th!
Me: You can search me! I don't care. How is it any different for me to enter before the game than during it? If anything, someone admitting me has more time to check me and would remember me better in the middle of the game. I just think you don't want people to buy cheap food and bring it back in.
Security Rep.: SIR!!! SEPTEMBER 11th!!!
Me: Okay, you just keep saying that but aren't explaining why. (walk away)

That doesn't make any sense.
