My 75 lb. standard poodle broke free of his collar several nights ago and I found him with a small black cat in his jaws, shaking it violently. Except when I looked closer I saw a white stripe running down its back. I think I yelled Noooooooooooo!!!!.......1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 teaspoons of dish soap. 2 baths with this got him back in the house..........An older pic from a couple years ago but you get the idea......

Had to copy and paste. I thought tomato juice does the trick on the smell, but then you'd have wound up with a pink poodle

Evidently that's the old home remedy. My wife found this one on the Net and when I called the emergency vet clinic they gave us the same recipe. It was a Friday night and they told us to call our regular vet in the morning to see about the possibility of a rabies booster. The skunk did not appear rabid - it was a baby - and apparently survived unscathed as it proceeded to skamper away after Randy dropped it. Anyway, no booster required and our vet told us we could follow up with a tomato juice bath and / or drink as it was a full blast to the kisser...........3 of those peroxide baths followed up by his regular oatmeal shampoo bath and you can still catch a whiff...........

How bad is it? I have seen numerous skunks, both dead and alive, but have been fortunate to never smell one.

My daughter was driving to work one morning and the car in front of her hit a skunk.

She drove through the "red mist" and her car was foul for days. Even after she took it thorugh a car wash. It was in the air system.

I was jogging around an acreage i owned years back , when to my horror i saw my black lab running behind me wagging and panting happily. In his mouth - a skunk , he really wanted to show me. Half day of work missed , 10 cans of tomato Juice and a bottle of dish soap later

TRUE KARMA STORY - back in high school a guy universally recognized as a Jerkasaurus used to go out of his way to swerve and hit gophers , cats , squirrels etc etc. I will always fondly remember him lamenting to the instructor in welding class that he so badly creamed a skunk with his Fierro that i could net get scent free. He had to write it off. That skunk died a heroes death:lol:

If I had a bumper sticker, this would be it

I was highballing back to work after my noon hour swim one day 2 years ago.

Came barreling around a corner and there was a doe and 2 wee Jack Russell sized fawns on the road.

I jammed on the brakes and heard a Pfffft! and suddenly brakes were spongy... I barely slowed down enough to avoid wiping them out.

I had broken a rear brake line. Brake fluid all over.

Damn. But I would bet you would do it again.

I would.

Absofuckinglutely.

Driving slowly does not mean safely.

Where I can I drive "quickly"....

They finally upgrade the speed limits on the Vancouver Island Autobahn. North of a certain point i's 120KPH maximum.

So of course I take the 20 KPH over they give you which gets you to ~90 MPH.

The other day on my way home from meetings up Island I had the odd "DRS" burst up to 185-200KPH.

That was fun....

And here is my dearly departed Mika Hakkinen. Mouth cancer got her a couple of years ago. Best cat ever.

The fine looking animal in the attached picture is Isis. She became part of my family about 12 years ago when she was adopted as a stray kitten from the rescue shelter my mother volunteers for.

She moved with me from Buffalo to Charlotte in 2003, from Charlotte to Sweden in 2008 (she loved that trip!) and back again 2 years later.

About 2 months ago - after multiple visits to the vet - she was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive case of large-cell lymphoma.

She fought hard.

Her fight ended yesterday.
