Which is bullshit.

I used to get into heated debates with my political science teacher. He had a problem with anyone who was not democrat. That is wrong. I used to get into huge debates with my philosphy teacher as well, but he (towards the end of the semester) came and shook my hand and said I was one of the best students he had for generating thoughtful debate in the class when it came to political philosophies and such.

Philosophy teachers are always dicks. It's their job. I hated mine. But he was just being the devil's advocate with every situation. It was his way of sparking conversation. But truly, it always kills me how the liberal education system complains about the closed-mindedness of conservatives...but absolutely refuse to accept anything you say if you're conservative.

Haha my philosophy professor in college was completely anti conformity, and the only way to pass was to conform to his opinion. They are dicks but I get it.

This also means the most exposure to liberal-biased universities and colleges. I go to a Christian school, and we're still pretty liberal here. Are there conservative rules? Heck yes, but still for a Christian university, it's liberal. I'm always amazed at how college changes peoples political views. Part of that could be education, but biased professors are a big part too.

I think you might be giving professors too much credit and students not enough. While I think it's all a blend of factors including the education and influences that you've mentioned, I think the greatest contributing factor is young people with relatively little life experience getting out of the niche they grew up in and meeting people with different views and backgrounds. College life opens you to a much larger world in a variety of ways, and I don't think it's a coincidence that those who experience a glimpse of that larger world tend to vote blue consequently. Just mho.

I agree with this. I am watching it first hand with my daughter who turns 16 in a month. She is very quickly becoming aware of the world outside our town and is pretty keen at picking up on the differences between being open and looking for answers and closing off and refusing to believe what's in front of you (She is going into the sciences too, if that explains anything).

It's kind of cool to see, especially since she hasn't really picked any one side of any major issue besides marriage equality, but she does gravitate towards people who are willing to listen instead of just screaming "YOU'RE WRONG!".

Young people typically have a bit more empathy than us old people who have been embittered by life.

college kids dont want anyone telling them what to do. so they vote democrat.

college kids who graduate with BS degrees want govt assistance just in case. so they vote democrat.

college kids who graduate with legit degrees look at their paychecks and see how much is going to the govt, and vote republican.

more likely that college is where economics (and philosophy for that matter) is taught, so people are more likely to understand consequences instead of buying into the old 'herp-derp" that is laid out on a platter.

Maybe I'm naive, but I always thought this was the argument against "big government," not a rallying cry of the Democratic Party.

college kids who graduate with BS degrees want govt assistance just in case. so they vote democrat.

college kids who graduate with legit degrees look at their paychecks and see how much is going to the govt, and vote republican.

This sounds pretty baseless to me, but if there is some data somewhere that led you to that conclusion, I'd be curious to see it. I'd also be curious if you feel that math, science, technology and engineering degrees fall in to that "legit" category you superciliously distinguished.

I was a Philosophy major and most (around 80%) of my teachers were very cool. They were the types I'd love to go out and grab a beer with after class and talk about meaningless shit. Maybe it's a West Coast thing to be more laid back??? ;) (kidding about the West Coast thing folks, move along)

Now my Econ teachers.....they weren't necessarily dicks.....but they "knew" everything.

That's what happened to me. I was republican when I got to college, and now I'm a libertarian. But I'm not a libertarian who wants all government aid programs abolished, but reformed and made efficient so that they actually do more good than they do now, and ideally maybe even cost less money.

But I think a lot of what changed my social views was that I actually met people who weren't straight white Catholics, and I really liked them and wanted them to be treated fairly and have good lives, when it came right down to it. Of course, before I met those people, I'm pretty sure I was either ambivalent on social policies, or I didn't even know they existed. I don't remember, it was many years ago, and I didn't like who I was as a college freshman, so I might have repressed it all...

Any, good point sir. :yo:

I'll put it this way: if someone offers to take my student debt off my hands, I'll let them, but I'm no going to ask anyone to do it for me.

And I have a BS degree, and it's awesome. :D
