Just got back from seeing Ender's Game. The movie follows the spirit of the book (if not the letter of it) quite well. It gets a BIG thumbs up from me. :thumb:

never heard of the book. is this along the lines of The Hunger Games for girls and Twilight for fuckwads type writing?

Ender's game almost sounds like a mix between these 2 movies:

Never read those others myself. It was written by a fairly well respected & established Sci-Fi writer named Orson Scott Card. There are 3 or 4 sequels, and another 'parallel' group of books based on one of the supporting characters in Ender's Game. - But I don't think that we're in for a whole movie franchise ala Twilight or Hunger Games, as none of the rest, while reasonably good reading, really strike me as movie material.

I still can't look Harrison Ford in the eye, after the last Indiana Jones.

Thor was a lot of fun. Good action (the major fight sequence was pretty cool) and a lot of laughs.

I never read the books, so based on just what I saw from the movie, I give Ender's Game a 5 out of 10.

It was ok, but nothing special.

In regards to Ender's Game, I might as well post this here as well if anyone is interested?

Here are a few of the things I had a problem with after watching the movie.

To avoid spoiling it for people, I will post it in white font, which anyone can scroll over to reveal if they want to. Just don't reply back to this post, as the white font will be visible to anyone.

1) In 50 years, the people of Earth went from flying aircraft like you see today, to all of a sudden having multiple stations built in space, and giant transporters and weapon ships piloted by drones. Not too mention having the ability to travel far from the Planet in a matter of no time to set up a base on a distant Planet.

2) Mazer Rackham survives but they tell everyone he died, why? What really was the need for them to say that he sacrificed himself? Was it to get people to want to volunteer for their space program if they thought he died saving the Planet? Wouldn't it make more sense to use him as a recruiting tool for young kids as a hero who survived? Didn't Harrison Ford say he can take the kids anyways without permission?

And why couldn't he have been part of Wiggin's team? Clearly he has the knowledge and experience, and he could have had years of training in the simulators. Who better to be a part of his team?

3) So is there some rule that says only young kids can fight Aliens using computer panels from far away? What happened to all the other kids who were training for years before Wiggin's and his misfit crew showed up? Weren't there other kids there who were better than some of them? Why is it impossible for anyone over the age of 16 to be good with computers?

4) What was the need for training in zero gravity and hand to hand combat? It served no purpose in the end when they fought the Aliens on their home Planet while sitting in a chair. They said they were out of time towards the end, so wouldn't of it made more sense to train them in the computer simulators instead of the other bullshit?

5) How the hell did the Aliens build spaceships that had the ability to travel across space to wage war? It seems impossible for a race of bugs to pull off such a feat like this. Not too mention their home world showed no signs of being an advanced society with complex structures and what not. Just seemed odd is all.

6) So the Queen Alien Bug finds a way to communicate with Wiggins through his gameboy, yet she couldn't tap into the audio and tell him what she wants. For some reason it's always better to send random images that don't get deduced until it's too late. How convenient.

7) Why did they send a bunch of transport ships that have drones on it instead of sending over 100 nukes? I mean c'mon now, they want to annihilate them, right? Launching over 100 nukes at a planet would be a good way to do it. And with all their technological feats in the past 50 years, you mean to tell me they could only build 1 super weapon that has to recharge to create drama? Even if they built 1 more, the battle would have been over in a matter of minutes. Seems kinda odd to me.

8) Why would Wiggins even help the Queen by taking the egg? Didn't they come to Earth and destroy millions of people and try to take over the Planet? Why are humans now suddenly the bad guys? I guess White Guilt still exist 50 years into the future?

9) Ok, Ok...I get it! We're just like the Aliens bugs in the movie, and if we're not careful, we're going to waste our Planet to the point we can't live on it anymore. Thank for the message, hippies!

10) Why did Wiggins brother flunk out? Because he was too aggressive? So destroying an entire race of Space Bugs and their Planet is just fine, but a kid who would enjoy doing it is crossing the line?

Just a few things I was thinking while watching this movie. Unless the book explained it better, I was left scratching my head most of the time.

A lot of valid questions there, IPW. I read the book - many years ago, mind you - & would be willing to take my best shot at answering them for you via a Private Msg if you are REALLY interested.

... Or tell me how to post in white print & I'll do it here.

When you type something, just select the text you want to change color, and then go to the "A icon", located right above where you post, to the left of the Smiley Face, and select "white".

You end up with something that looks like this.

Okay then: Here it goes...

1) I don't recall a specific year/time frame noted in the book, so that may just have been the script writer's choice. I do recall that the "Bugger's" initial "invasion"/contact with Man comes at a human colony on some moon or other in our solar system, & the major attack (shown directly in Earth's skies in the movie, but I don't think that this was the case in the book) came later.

2) Rackham's victory came MANY years earlier than the events in the movie. He was never listed as dead in the book as I recall, but his life was extended via a prolonged existence at light speed (there is some reasonable physical theory - which I have heard of but don't claim to understand - that postulates that this would be possible) so that he might be brought back to "guide" the chosen new fleet commander (Ender) once he was chosen & the time for the attack drew near.

3) The movie dialog covers this: Kids were preferred because they could supposedly process multiple bits of data/info faster than adults. As for those who came before Ender, I suppose that they became lower level commanders: The book doesn't cover this specifically either.

4) I'm going to go with the notion that they were training the recruits how to think about battles in space, i.e.; the possibility of enemies above/below you, hiding behind planets, etc....

5) Never really covered in the book, which also makes no mention of what the "Bugger's" home world looks like: The one shown was purely the movie's creation.

6) Well, they really don't have much of a story/movie if everything gets figured out in the early going, do they? Just something to keep the intrigue/suspense rolling along. - It was this way in the book too.

7) Hard to say; That one big ship in their fleet DID have a 'planet killer' weapon, right? Maybe the idea/fear was that the aliens could easily shoot down a bunch of unmanned nukes fired from half-way across space?

8) The fact that the "Bugger's" had a so-called "Hive Mind" society is key here: In the book, what we eventually learn is that when they 1st came our way, they (meaning the queens, because the drones can't really think for themselves) couldn't understand that humans were each individually capable of independent thought. Once they grasped this, they never came back. As in the movie, the actual attack was us going after them, out of a fear that they would be back attacking us one day.

9) Hey, it is Hollywierd, after all!

10) The book goes into Ender's brother in a good bit more detail. I guess that it boils down to the fear that he would be SO brutal that he wouldn't show any concern for the safety of his own troops/ships under ANY circumstances, thus throwing away the fleet to no great effect.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

From knowing nothing about the books, and just watching the movie, it came across as a completely average movie to me. It just seemed to me that they could have done so much more with the actually fighting and war, but choose to spend more time on character development instead.

I also understand that part of creating a story like this is to not always use common sense, and you have to allow yourself to be caught up in the fantasy of it all.
