Riddle me this: There are 10 candidates for a statscan job. The interviewers come in with guns and say the following:
"When the interview begins, you will be placed randomly in a line, front to back. Each of you will be given a hat, red or blue, assigned randomly. You can see the hats of the people in front of you, but not your hat or the hat of the people behind you. At this point, we will ask each of you to declare your own hat colour, starting with the person at the back of the line and moving forward. If you're correct, you get a job, if not, you'll be shot. If you say anything other than 'red' or 'blue' everyone will be shot. If you look around, everyone will be shot. If you speak out of turn, everyone will be shot."
The candidates then have ten minutes to discuss a strategy to optimize survival for as many candidates as possible.
I don't have the solutions, but I'm pretty sure I have the optimal strategy. Fire away.
if you assume that there are 5 of each hats:
1st guy is 50% no matter what
2nd guy says the opposite color of what dude #1 was. that's 5/9 chance.
the next guys, it depends on their field of view (can they see ALL the hats in front, or just the hat right in front?)
if they can JUST see the hat directly in front, then the pick the opposite for a 5/9 chance.
if they can see all the prior hats, then it depends on what the count is.
