NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Cowboys backup QB Kyle Orton has informed the team he plans to retire.
Orton may want to retire, but the real question is can he afford it. If Orton does not report, he would be forced to pay back $3 million of the $5 million signing bonus he received in 2012, as well as lose out on the $3 million salary he is scheduled for in 2014. The Cowboys view Orton as one of the top backups in the league and will do everything they can to hold onto him. Only 31 years old, the reasons for Orton's desire to hang 'em up are unclear. if he wants out that bad then I'm sure he has that money in a sock somewhere. Adios, heart for the game required.

If Romo is out, no matter who the backup is, it's gonna be "oh boy". But that goes for pretty much every team in the league that has a good starter.

I questioned Orton competitiveness when he so easily settled for a back up job. There were several teams he could have went to compete for a starting job. It would be in the best interest for all involved for Orton to beat feet.

Disagree. IMO we didn't lose much when Romo went down week 17. As a matter of fact I wish Romo would learn not t ohold the ball so long and how to get rid of it quicker by watching Orton. After not playing for a long time Orton stepped right in and had a good game. Exactly what you want from a veteran backup. Not everyone can do that. Is he as good as Romo or as important to this team as Romo? Of course not; that's why he isn't getting $100M for his role.

If it were me I would want him to go.

As has been stated on here already .. ( by Ford) Romo goes down this team has no chance anyway.

Like him or not this offense has been on Romos shoulders since Parcells left. It damn sure isn't a running offense and (we shall see with the O-line) but it has not been an O-line over the years that gives anyone a real shot...... So without Romo extending plays ..... this team would have been Redskins bad

That said ... if Romo goes down ... I say ride it out. A top pick is much more valuable than another 8-8 season

so if Orton retires & has to give back 3 mil.
Do we get that back on to our cap?
& if so would it be this years cap or next years?

No matter what this answer is. I say let him retire.

It would be more than 3MM, you also get his base back which in total would be around 6MM extra in cap space. The big kicker is that you won't be on the hook for future dead money due to the team option for him on next year. I let him walk; but letting him walk would also mean you have Weeden as your back up and possible starter if Romo's back doesn't hold up, not a good thought there. I'll have details on the cap for Orton after I research a little more.

you havent paid his base so you don't get it back

He retires it just means end of contract ......

what you get back is PART of the signing bonus ... which is what the debate is over .... 3 million

you used to be good at this

At this point I wouldn't even worry about getting part of his bonus back. I'd simply make him sign an agreement he will never sign with another team. If he retires and signs with a team in 2015 or beyond he has to repay the disputed bonus.
