Ortiz's age likely concern for Red Sox

David Ortiz wants another year added to his contract, which expires after the 2014 season.

The Boston Red Sox have said that they want to continue their relationship with Ortiz, but that they will only discuss a new deal when the time is appropriate.

The danger for the Red Sox is that Ortiz is 38 and less than a year removed from an Achilles injury that hampered his 2012 season. Ortiz hit an amazing .688 in the World Series, but only 13 players have hit at least 25 home runs in their age-38 season.

Since 2002, Ortiz has only had two seasons hitting less than 30 HRs. If he was an everyday position player, I'd be reluctant to make the move, but as a DH, I'd give him another year. Maybe they can work out something in regard to ABs, BA, etc. The guy is still a game changer when he steps up to the plate.
